Baron Johann Ludwig Alexius von Laudon (* 1767 in Riga ; † November 22, 1822 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal .

Life

Laudon came from the German-Baltic noble family of the Barons von Loudon and was originally in Russian military service, where he achieved the rank of captain . At the beginning of the Bavarian War of Succession he was accepted into the regiment of his uncle Ernst Gideon von Laudon . In 1787 he accompanied his uncle as a lieutenant colonel and general adjutant in the Russian-Austrian Turkish war .

After his uncle's death in 1790, he commanded the 29th Infantry Regiment, at the head of which he went into the First Coalition War . He achieved success in 1793 at the Battle of Weissenburg in Alsace .

In 1796 he was promoted to major general and entrusted with the command of a brigade in Tyrol . When relieving the fortress of Mantua, he had the task of securing the border against Graubünden and Valtellina . Before the onslaught of the French under Barthélemy-Catherine Joubert, he had to retreat behind Meran . However, reinforced by Tyrolean riflemen in the battle of Jenesien, he succeeded in pushing back the enemy who retreated to East Tyrol and Carinthia on April 2, 1797 after the battle of the Valser Joch near Spinges .

For his services to the recovery of South Tyrol he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Maria Theresa Order . He also distinguished himself in the Battle of Novi on August 15, 1799 and in the Battle of Turbigo on May 31, 1800. He became a Lieutenant Field Marshal and was given a division in Galicia .

During the Third Coalition War he distinguished himself in the Battle of Elchingen on October 14, 1805, but was captured by the French after the Battle of Ulm with Karl Mack von Leiberich and 5 other field marshal lieutenants. In 1809 it was used by the reserve army in Moravia . After the Peace of Schönbrunn he left the active service.

He died on November 22, 1822 at Laudon Castle in Hadersdorf near Vienna .
