Johann Ludwig Urban Blesson , first name: Ludwig, (* May 27, 1790 in Berlin ; † January 20, 1861 ibid) was a Prussian military writer and engineer officer.

Life

Blesson was the son of a master chef of Frederick the Great and studied mining . He attracted attention early on with the development of a new Frisch method for iron. In the course of the wars of liberation in 1813, he joined the pioneer corps as a volunteer . There he became Gerhard von Scharnhorst's officer in the Prussian engineering corps at the personal request and worked on the further development of iron ammunition. After the peace treaty, he came to the war school in Berlin as a captain to teach engineering . He published a lot.

In 1822 he accompanied the chief of the engineering corps and general inspector of the Prussian fortresses, Lieutenant General Gustav von Rauch , on trips to Russia. It was there that Blesson received the award of being accepted as a member of the "Russian Natural Research Society in Moscow". He also became a corresponding member of the Imperial Russian Scientific Military Committee. And in 1823 the Berlin Society of Friends of Nature accepted him as an honorary member.

His way of addressing things made him many enemies. When he was about to be transferred to Stralsund - in his eyes a demotion - he took his leave as major in 1829 . In 1830 Blesson began the preparatory work for the creation of the Prussian Pension Insurance Institution , which was founded in 1838 and of which he remained director until his death. He also worked on the irrigation of Berlin.

In 1848 he was for a time in command of the Berlin vigilante group , but resigned his post after the attack on the armory .

He published numerous writings, many of which are considered epoch-making. For many years he was editor of the military literature newspaper and the magazine for art, science and the history of war as well as the reference library for officers . In Berlin he was a member of the Masonic Lodge "Zum Pilgrim".

Johann Ludwig Urban Blesson died in Berlin in 1861 at the age of 70 and was buried in the St. Hedwig cemetery on Liesenstrasse . The tomb has not been preserved.

family

In January 1815 he married Karoline Constance Verona (1793-1819), daughter of a Berlin architect and his wife Sophie Perrin. He now bought the Verona-Blesson house ( Unter den Linden 17/18, today: 43). But she died giving birth to her daughter Pauline. Two years after the death of his first wife, he married Katherine Schmedding († 1862), daughter of the secret councilor Johann Heinrich Schmedding . He had 11 children with her, but only 4 of them survived: Elise, Clara, Olga and Rosalie. The eldest, Elise (* 1822) later married the famous painter Cesare Mussini , whose parents lived in the same house.
