Johann Nepomuk Berger , pseudonym: Sternau, (born September 16, 1816 in Proßnitz , Moravia , † December 9, 1870 in Vienna ) was a politician, writer and lawyer.

Life

Berger studied law, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1841. In 1844 he became assistant for natural law and criminal law at the Theresianum in Vienna. From June 1848 to April 1849 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly and was one of the most astute and quick-witted speakers on the far left. Afterwards he was court and court advocate in Vienna and was elected to the Lower Austrian state parliament in March 1861 . In 1863 he was sent to the House of Representatives and first joined the Liberal Party and in 1867 founded the Left Club in the Reichsrat. As a representative of the idea of ​​equalization and constitutionalism, Berger was appointed to the " Citizens' Ministry " on December 30, 1867, as a minister without a portfolio . On January 15, 1870, he was removed from the ministerial office by Emperor Franz Joseph I at his request and at the same time resigned his mandates as a member of the state parliament and the Reichsrat. Like two other ministers, he resigned from the government because he was in the minority on the question of federalism.

Berger received from Emperor Franz Joseph I the dignity of a secret council (combined with the salutation "Excellency") as well as the order of the Iron Crown 1st class , which until 1884 was associated with the elevation to the baron status. Since Berger died shortly after the award of the medal, his two sons Wilhelm and Alfred Berger "became 1st class in accordance with the statutes of the order due to their father Dr. Johann Berger, Real Secret Councilor and Minister as a Knight of the Iron Crown acquired entitlement "raised to the baron class.

In 1894 the Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz in Vienna- Ottakring (16th district) was named after him.
