Johann Rudolf Byss
Johann Rudolf Byss or Bys (born May 11, 1660 in Chur , † December 11, 1738 in Würzburg ) was a Swiss painter . Byss produced Dutch-influenced panel paintings and frescoes in the Italian Baroque .
Life
He first learned his trade from his father Frans Joseph Byss and perfected his skills on trips through Italy , Germany and England , before settling in Prague around 1689 , which he left again around 1712. Later he was commissioned by Emperor Leopold I to create ceiling and wall paintings and pictures for the Hofburg in Vienna . On behalf of Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn , he initially carried out work in the Schloss von Gaibach in 1712 or 1715 and was then entrusted with the supervision of the electoral picture gallery in Schloss Weißenstein in Pommersfelden . In 1719 he published a description of the painting collection in Bamberg , but it had various errors. After the Elector's death, he went to Würzburg , where he was involved in the pictorial decoration of the Würzburg Residence , in particular as chief court painter in the painting of the Venetian room , which was furnished from 1738 to 1741 , and which (after the fire of 1945 from rainwater that penetrated largely destroyed) ceiling paintings for the Schönborn Chapel at Würzburg Cathedral . and could enjoy the favor of a nephew of the elector.
