Johann Rudolph Nolten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Rudolph Nolten (* October 24, 1691 in Timmerlah , now a district of Braunschweig ; † December 8, 1754 in Stendal ), also Nolte or Johannes Rudolphus Noltenius , was a Protestant clergyman and most recently a general superintendent in Stendal.

ancestry

Nolten's ancestors came from the Netherlands . Two brothers had fled to Germany in the 16th century due to the persecution of the Calvinists by the Spanish governor of the Spanish Netherlands, Duke of Alba (1507–1582). One of them accepted the faith of the Reformed , the other, however, the confession of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The latter, George Nolten, came to Braunschweig.

Church in Timmerlah

Nolten's grandfather Johann Nolten (1635–1714), who had been a preacher in Timmerlah for over fifty years, had been accepted into the Order of the Knights of Our Lady of the Swan (Swan Order ) by the imperial Count Palatine Johann Rist and crowned a poet after singing songs and had also translated some biblical books into Latin verse. The funeral sermon was given by the superintendent in Braunschweig, Christian Ludwig Ermisch . His grandson Johannes Rudolphus Noltenius wrote an article about it.

His parents were the preacher in Timmerlah Ernst Heinrich Nolten and his wife Elisabeth Maria Häseler. In 1717 Nolten married Margarete Elisabeth Knakrügge, daughter of the mayor Clemens Friederich Knackrügge and his wife Elisabeth Müller in Gardelegen. The father congratulated on the marriage with a letter. The son Friedrich Heinrich Nolte, born in 1718, came from this marriage. He studied theology in Helmstedt. The historian and orientalist Hermann von der Hardt wrote a welcoming letter to greet him at the university. Hardt wrote a farewell letter on de-registration, which he also dedicated to his father. Friedrich Heinrich Nolten became a field chaplain in Infantry Regiment No. 30, which was commanded from 1733 by the Prussian Colonel Joachim Christoph von Jeetze (1663–1752).

In his second marriage, Nolten was married to Eleonore Elisabeth Heinzelmann († 1769), daughter of Justus Heinzelmann , pastor at St. Marien and superintendent in Gardelegen, from 1720 . From this marriage he had 18 children, but 13 of them died at a young age. His daughter Johanne Elisabeth married the then preacher Gottfried Christian Rothe from Bombeck in the Altmark , who later became Nolten's successor as general superintendent in Stendal. The couple separated in 1750. Nevertheless, the contact remained. His youngest son Ernst Christoph Nolte studied theology in Halle and became a field preacher and later an inspector and pastor in Lenzen. After a short, serious illness, Nolten died in 1754.

Life

schooldays

In the first ten years of his life, he was raised by his father and grandfather. Then he attended the Martinsgymnasium in Braunschweig until he was 16 . Then he came to the Schöningen grammar school in Schöningen , where his cousin Paul Martin Nolte was principal. He then returned to Braunschweig for further schooling, where he was prepared for studying academic sciences.

Education

In 1711, on the advice of his father, he moved to Helmstedt University . Here he studied theological, philosophical and mathematical sciences. He was also interested in law and medicine. Then he took a position as private tutor at an old friend of his father's in Wolfenbüttel . He continued to occupy himself with theology and often gave popular pulpit lectures in front of the city community and also at the ducal court. Mathematics and philology also preoccupied him because he had a great affinity for the education office.

In 1720 he received a position as a deacon at the Marienkirche in Gardelegen, in 1731 he became archdeacon at the Nikolaikirche , in 1735 senior pastor at the Marienkirche and superintendent in Gardelegen.
