Johann V. Droste zu Hülshoff (* 1421 ; † 1462 ) was a councilor and treasurer of the city of Münster and landowner of Hülshoff Castle .

Life

Origin and family

Johann V. was the second son of the mayor of Münster, Johann IV. Droste zu Hülshoff and Wobelia von Travelmann. He belonged to the 9th known generation of his family.

Johanns V. older brother Alhard II., Who u. a. had inherited the old lineage ceilingbrock near Everswinkel , became the progenitor of the branch lines of Droste zu Handorf , zu Uhlenbrock , zu Möllenbeck, zu Hofe, zu Klotinghoff and (starting from the Droste zu Uhlenbrock) in Danzig and Königsberg as well as (starting from the Droste zu Möllenbeck) to Zützen. His younger brother Egbert, who had inherited properties in Sendenhorst , Altenberge , Everswinkel, Greven and Nordwalde , was married to Christina von Kerckerinck and settled in a town courtyard opposite the St. Martini church . His sister Kunigunde married Heinrich von Drolshagen , his sister Margaretha Bernd von Kerckerinck at Haus Stapel .

Johann V inherited Hülshoff Castle, which his father had acquired and where he continued the future family line. He married Margaretha von Kerckerinck on the Bispinghof , who brought the Stadthof am Krummen Timpen into marriage, which served the family as their main residence until the 16th century. They only had one child, the successor to Gut Hülshoff and later mayor of Münster, Johann VI. Droste to Hülshoff . Johann V died at the age of 41.

City councilor and treasurer of Münster

Like his ancestors, Johann V was elected to the city council in 1434 and 1439. In 1439 he also officiated as treasurer of the city of Münster . In this capacity, the bishop and sovereign invited him to the state parliament in 1441 and 1454. In 1454 he had to fight as a vassal of the bishop in the Münster collegiate feud against the usurper Johann V (Hoya) , who had driven his father-in-law Bernd von Kerckerinck , who was also mayor of Münster, to Hülshoff Castle.

Johann V's fortunes suffered greatly from the numerous campaigns at the Münster collegiate feud in 1457. The old chapel near Hülshoff Castle , which was built by the previous owners, was completely destroyed by Johann V (Hoya). Fortunately, Johann V's wife had brought a considerable fortune into the marriage, including possessions and rights in Senden , Amelsbüren , Telgte , Roxel , Ahlen , Havixbeck , Nienberge and Ottmarsbocholt as well as the town courtyard at Krummen Timpen in Münster, which owned the Droste in Hülshoff then served for more than 200 years. The 100 hectare König farm in Roxel came to Hülshoff through his father-in-law.
