Johann Security Guard the Elder
Johann Wachmann the Elder (* July 22, 1592 in Bremen , † May 12, 1659 in Bremen) was the syndic of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the city's envoy in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia .
biography
Wachmann was the son of the Bremen councilor Johann Wachmann. He studied at the grammar school illustrious in Bremen as well as at the University of Marburg and the Dutch University of Franeker . Afterwards he was Hofmeister (private tutor) in Speyer . After several long trips to Switzerland , France , England and Holland , he became a lawyer in Bremen. 1628 graduated as Dr. jur. in Strasbourg . In 1634 the Bremen council appointed him vice syndic and in 1637 syndicus.
For Bremen he worked several times in diplomatic missions, including in 1637 at the Reichstag in Regensburg . Between 1644 and 1648 Wachmann was, together with Gerhard Coccejus and Syndikus Liborius Line, one of the Bremen and Hanseatic ambassadors during the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia in Osnabrück and Münster . There she campaigned above all for the imperial immediacy of Bremen. In 1646 it was achieved that Bremen - against payment of 100,000 Reichstalers - from Emperor Ferdinand III. received a certificate about the imperial immediacy of the city - the Linz diploma .
Wachmann and previously his uncle mayor Heinrich Krefting made a special contribution to a further development of the Bremen city law , which he commented and glossed over. He also had an extensive correspondence with foreign scholars and diplomats.
The Mayor of Bremen Hermann Wachmann was his brother, his son, the legal scholar and Bremen ambassador Johann Wachmann the Younger , his nephew.
