From 1987 to 1989 he successfully accompanied Tilmann Holsten, who was nine at the time, in proceedings for refusal to attend school . The judgment issued on September 7, 1989 by the Wolfratshausen District Court (Az .: 2 OWi 46 Js 32069/88) is the only legally effective acquittal for refusal to attend school in Germany to date. Judge Eckermann justified his judgment with a quote from the Bavarian Constitution : "Healthy children are the most delicious good of a people" ( Art. 125, Paragraph 1, p. 1 ). In 1991 Johannes Heimrath wrote a petition for freedom and self-determination in education , which was sent to the petition committees of the state parliaments and the members of the German Bundestag . He was a co-initiator of the Temenos learning group and the resulting model project Temenos Kindergarten e. V. in Wolfratshausen (in Gelting since 2015) and contributed to the establishment of the Lassaner Winkel Small Village School, a free, democratic school.

Johannes Heimrath is co-founder of the citizens' initiative Landwende , which was launched in 2001 as a result of a herbicide accident and which advocates for “grandchildren-friendly”, non-toxic, diverse and rural agriculture. As part of the citizens' initiative, he initiated the Agricultural Poisons? No thanks! , which calls for a ban on all pesticides and in particular the total herbicide glyphosate , and the Urinale 2015 campaign , which carried out the world's most comprehensive data collection on the pollution of the population with glyphosate to date.

Alliance for an agriculture suitable for grandchildren

At Heimrath's initiative, the Alliance for Agriculture Suitable for Grandchildren was founded on January 10, 2018 , an association of 22 organic companies that actively campaign against the use of pesticides.
