Johannes Hoffmeister (theologian)

Johannes Hoffmeister or Johann Hoffmeister (* 1509 or 1510 in Oberndorf am Neckar , † August 21, 1547 in Günzburg ) was a German Augustinian priest and controversial theologian .

Life

Hoffmeister came to the Augustinian monastery in Colmar at a young age . In 1526 the superiors of the order sent him to the University of Mainz to study theology . In 1528 he went to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . He was then ordained a priest and returned to the Augustinian monastery in Colmar. He became prior of the monastery in 1533 . In its time, Kolmar was surrounded by Protestant territories. He tried to fight Protestantism in the monastery and beyond.

Hoffmeister was a participant in the religious discussions of Hagenau in 1540 , Worms in 1540/1541 and Regensburg in 1541 . At the request of Emperor Charles V , who issued him the imperial letter of protection on May 18, 1545 in Worms, he also took part in the Regensburg Religious Discussion of 1546 . In 1545 Cardinal Otto von Waldburg appointed him as a preacher to the Worms Reichstag.

Hoffmeister also achieved a prominent position in the order and in 1543 became provincial of the Rhenish-Swabian order province, at the request of his late predecessor Konrad Treger . On July 9, 1546, the general of the order appointed him vicar over all German Augustinian monasteries and instructed him to pay special attention to the novices . At the request of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria , he traveled to Munich as a preacher and to Ulm on the instructions of the emperor . There he fell ill and shortly afterwards died in nearby Günzburg. Sometimes it has been claimed that he was poisoned.
