Johanneskapelle in Vicht

The Johanneskapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Stolberg district of Vicht in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the remaining part of the old parish church.

The chapel is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and entered as an architectural monument in the list of architectural monuments in Vicht .

location

The small church is located in the northern part of Vicht opposite the parish church of St. Johann Baptist on Eifelstrasse (L 238). The cemetery is located directly to the west of the chapel.

history

The Johanneskapelle is the first church in Vicht and was built between 1672 and 1676 at the instigation of the military master Theodor von Leers. The first service was held in the chapel on April 20, 1676. Between the parish elevation in 1694 and the completion of the new church in 1912, it was the local parish church . In the years 1849 to 1853, the small church was significantly expanded to the west. On this occasion, the windows probably received their tracery as well . The extension was closed in 1964 for static reasons, so that the Johanneskapelle now roughly corresponds to the shape of 1676.

Building description

The Johanneskapelle is a simple hall building in two bays made of quarry stone with a three-sided choir closure in the south. A sacristy closed on five sides is attached to it. The interior is spanned by ribbed vaults.

Furnishing

In the interior there is a stone altar and a Pietà from 1913. The six stained glass windows were made in 1992 based on designs by the artist Monika Rütten.
