John Celestand (born March 6, 1977 in Houston , Texas ) is a retired American basketball player . After his studies he was by the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA drafted and was as a junior player equal NBA champion 2000 . He then did not get a new contract and moved to Europe , where he was particularly active in the German basketball league . Celestand ended his playing career in 2005 at the age of 28. He then worked as a television commentator in his home country and founded his own player consulting company.

Player career

During his studies at Villanova University in Pennsylvania , Celestand was active for the University Team Wildcats in the NCAA Division I. He is one of the ten best original donors of all time this team and was team internally the top scorer in his last two college seasons. Following his studies, he was selected by the LA Lakers in the 1999 NBA Draft and was part of a team with star players such as Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant that helped the Lakers win the championship for the first time in twelve years in 2000. As a rookie , Celestand was only used in 16 games and released from his contract after the season. First he played in the short-lived International Basketball League , which later became part of the CBA .

In February 2001, the German first division team from Braunschweig signed him . The club, which was in severe financial turmoil, had replaced almost the entire team and coach after the departure of the new name sponsor Metabox . The new coach Ken Scalabroni could not only keep the class, especially with the help of Celestand, but also achieve a play-off placement in the BBL 2000/01 season . By the services in the BBL is Celestand had recommended for better European clubs and he was in the following season by the Italian runner Fortitudo in Bologna committed, but for which he only six games in Serie A completed. In November 2001 he moved to the French LNB Pro A to the local runner-up ASVEL in Lyon . According to his own statement, he did not get along with coach Bogdan Tanjević and left the club again in February 2002, before ASVEL later won the 16th national championship and the first in 21 years. In the following season he was briefly with the German champions Alba Berlin, for which he completed more games in the ULEB Euroleague than in the Bundesliga. This commitment also ended in February 2003 before Alba was able to celebrate the championship for the seventh time in a row. He then played a season in Ukrainian Kiev . In 2004 he returned to the place of origin of his European career and played for BS Energy , the new sponsor name of the Braunschweig club. The Braunschweiger, who had started the season with his former coach Ken Scalabroni, had installed former German national coach Henrik Dettmann , previously sporting director, as their new coach after a bad start to the season . Although the relegation was achieved, but the targeted play-off placement was clearly missed. In view of his recent mediocre performance in Braunschweig, Celestand did not receive any particularly lucrative offers and he ended his career as a player frustrated by the decisions made by management and coaches.
