John Mitchell (born January 22, 1985 in Oakville , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 566 games in the National Hockey League for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers during his career .
Career
John Mitchell began his career as a hockey player with the Plymouth Whalers , for whom he played for a total of four years in the Ontario Hockey League from 2001 to 2005 . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 2003 in the fifth round as a total of 158th player by the Toronto Maple Leafs . Towards the end of the 2004/05 season, the attacker played for the first time in professional ice hockey when he played two games for the St. John's Maple Leafs , the then Toronto farm team , from the American Hockey League .
From 2005 to 2008, Mitchell stood exclusively for the new AHL Maple Leafs farm team, the Toronto Marlies , before joining the Toronto Maple Leafs roster in the summer of 2008 and making his debut in the later this season National Hockey League existed. Mitchell scored his first two NHL goals on November 1, 2008 in a 5-2 win over New York Rangers . In late February 2011, Mitchell was given in a transfer deal in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Rangers.
On July 1, 2012, he signed a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche .
After the 2016/17 season, Mitchell did not get a further contract in Colorado, so he had been looking for a new employer since July 2017. He found this in the Cleveland Monsters from the AHL, which however did not commit him after three competitive games on trial. As a result, Mitchell moved in October to the Nuremberg Ice Tigers in the German Ice Hockey League , where he signed a contract until the end of the current season. In Nuremberg he was able to establish himself immediately as a top performer, becoming Player of the Month for December, scoring 32 points (12 goals) in 37 preliminary round games and 11 more points (5 goals) in the subsequent playoffs in 12 games. He and his team were eliminated in the semi-finals of the best-of-seven series against the Eisbären Berlin . At the beginning of May 2018, he moved within the league to the reigning German champions EHC Munich .
