John O'Brien-Docker , also John O'Brien Docker (born December 25, 1938 in London - † August 3, 2017 in Hamburg ), was a British - German musician , songwriter , arranger and band leader . The pop rock musician Ian O'Brien-Docker is his son.

Life

John O'Brien-Docker grew up in his native London. After finishing school he worked there as a bank clerk . In the mid-1960s he emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany and founded the folk rock group Die City Preachers in Hamburg in 1965 , made up of well-known musicians such as keyboardist Jean-Jacques Kravetz and drummer and later singer Udo Lindenberg and singers Inga Rumpf , Sibylle Kynast , Dagmar Krause , Alexandra and the singer, art piper and multi-instrumentalist Eckart Kahlhofer emerged .

From the mid-1970s, after the City Preachers dissolved, John O'Brien-Docker worked primarily as an arranger, including for the music producer Rolf Zuckowski . With his arrangements, inspired by English-Irish folk music, he provided the sound for “Rolf and his friends” and the Finkwarder Speeldeel . But also songwriters Knut Kiesewetter , Fiede Kay , Volker Lechtenbrink and many others sang their songs in his tailor-made arrangements. The brilliant guitarist also worked as a studio musician and was a role model for young guitarists and arrangers.

John O'Brien-Docker was at home in Blankenese . He died after a long illness at the age of 78.
