John S. Pillsbury

John Sargent Pillsbury (born July 29, 1828 in Sutton , New Hampshire , † October 18, 1901 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American politician , entrepreneur and philanthropist . He was a member of the Republican Party and from 1876 to 1882 the eighth governor of the state of Minnesota.

Pillsbury grew up in the eastern United States in New Hampshire. After completing school, he opened a shop in Warner with Walter Harriman , who would later become a Civil War general and governor of New Hampshire . In 1855 he moved west and settled in St. Anthony (now part of Minneapolis). As a businessman he was involved in various ventures. He had his greatest success with CA Pillsbury and Company , a food manufacturer that his nephew Charles Alfred Pillsbury founded in collaboration with him.

After leading members of the Republican Party were enthusiastic about Pillsbury's success as a businessman, they were able to persuade him to get into politics. There he was first in the city administration of St. Anthony and later worked as a Senator from Minnesota , before becoming the eighth governor of the US state on January 7, 1876 . Merit is the liquidation of the railroad bonds and the establishment of a federal agency to fight corruption. During a plague of locusts in 1877, Pillsbury and the Church announced a day of prayer. One day later, all the locusts were killed by a snow storm after a weather change. A chapel was built to commemorate this miracle. After the end of his third term in 1882, he ended his political career and devoted himself to social and business projects.

Pillsbury was known as a philanthropist who often anonymously supported various projects. For example, he helped the University of Minnesota, which was in financial difficulties, to repay its debts and was a member of the university board of directors from 1863 until his death in 1901, which is why he was named "Father of the University".

Pillsbury was married with two children.
