Jorge Gutiérrez Espinosa (born September 18, 1975 ) is a retired Cuban boxer . Gutiérrez was winner of the 1999 Pan American Games , silver medalist at the 1999 World Championships and Olympic gold medalist in 2000

Career

1994 Gutiérrez won the Junior World Championships (U19) in the light middleweight division (-71 kg).

Gutiérrez was Cuban champion in 1999 and 2000. In 1997 and 1998 he had to admit defeat to Ariel Hernández in the final.

1997 Gutiérrez took part in the Pan American Championships and was able to win them in the middleweight (-75 kg). At the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1999 he also won the gold medal, but this time started again in the light middleweight division. In the same year he started at the Pan American Games and was able to win these too. In the World Cup 1999 Gutiérrez reached after beating Nikola Sjekloca, Yugoslavia (9: 1), Malik Dziarra, Belarus (8: 2), Dilshod Yarbekov, Uzbekistan (8: 1), and Ermakhan Ibraimov, Kazakhstan , the final, which he lost to Marian Simion , Romania , without a fight due to an injury and thus won the silver medal.

At the Olympic Games in 2000 Gutiérrez won the gold medal in the middleweight division (75 kg). During the tournament he defeated Christian Wallot , Germany (RSC 3rd), Adrian Diaconu , Romania (KO 1st), Wugar Alakparow , Azerbaijan (19: 9) and in the final Gaidarbek Gaidarbekow , Russia (17:15).

At the beginning of 2001 Gutiérrez lost in the final of the Cuban championships against Yordanis Despaigne (10: 8). After an early elimination at the Chemistry Cup 2001 and another defeat by Despaigne at the renowned Giraldo Cordova Cardin tournament, Gutiérrez withdrew from the ring.
