José Cos y Macho
José María Justo Cardinal Cos y Macho (born August 6, 1838 in Terán , Cantabria , Spain , † December 17, 1919 in Valladolid ) was Archbishop of Valladolid .
Life
José Cos y Macho first attended the Jesuit school in Segura and then studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Santander and Salamanca . He received his doctorate in theology and received the sacrament of ordination in 1862 . After further studies, he worked as a lecturer at the Seminary in Santander. In 1865 he became the canon of the cathedral of Oviedo , and in 1882 he was secretary of the archbishop's treasury. In 1884 he was appointed Archdeacon of the Cathedral Chapter of Cordoba .
On June 10, 1886 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Mondoñedo . The Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela , Victoriano Guisasola y Rodríguez , gave him episcopal ordination on September 12th of the same year.
On February 14, 1889, he was appointed Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba . From 1891 until his death, José Cos y Macho was Senator of the Kingdom of Spain. In 1892 the Pope appointed him Bishop of Madrid and in 1901 Archbishop of Valladolid. Pope Pius X accepted José Cos y Macho on November 27, 1911 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo in the college of cardinals . José Cardinal Cos y Macho attended the conclave of 1914.
He died on December 17, 1919 in Valladolid and was buried in the local cathedral .
