Hugo Garaycoa

José Hugo Garaycoa Hawkins (born June 2, 1930 in Callao , † March 27, 2018 in Lima ) was a Peruvian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Tacna y Moquegua .

Life

Hugo Garaycoa first studied economics and accounting before becoming a priest. After his theological training, he was ordained a priest on July 9, 1961 . He received his doctorate in both Canon Law and Roman Law.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Horaea and auxiliary bishop in Lima on December 16, 1982 . The Archbishop of Lima , Juan Cardinal Landázuri Ricketts, OFM , donated him episcopal ordination on January 25 of the next year ; Co- consecrators were Eduardo Picher Peña , Archbishop of Huancayo , and Alberto Aurelio Brazzini Diaz-Ufano , Auxiliary Bishop in Lima.

On June 6, 1991, he was appointed Bishop of Tacna by John Paul II . On September 1, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

From 2003 to 2006 he was President of the Episcopal Conference of Peru (Conferencia Episcopal Peruana CEP) and a member of the National Education Conference. At the Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae (UCSS) he taught the social doctrine of the Church.

Hugo Garaycoa was chairman of the Commission for Social Pastoral Care of CELAM and was committed to Caritas Peru for 28 years and was President of Caritas Peru from 1994 to 1997 and 1997 to 2000. In 2015 he was recognized for his work.
