José Ignacio Munilla Aguirre (born November 13, 1961 in Zumarraga , Spain ) is a Spanish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of San Sebastián .

Life

José Ignacio Munilla Aguirre studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Colegio del Sagrado Corazón de Mundaiz in Donostia-San Sebastián and at the seminary in Toledo . He received on 29 June 1986, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Munilla Aguirre became vicar in the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Zumarraga. José Ignacio Munilla Aguirre holds a degree in spirituality from the Theological Faculty of Northern Spain in Burgos .

On June 24, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Palencia . The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Manuel Monteiro de Castro , donated him episcopal ordination on September 10 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of San Sebastián, Juan María Uriarte Goiricelaya , and the Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante , Rafael Palmero .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of San Sebastián on November 21, 2009. The inauguration took place on January 9, 2010.

Munilla, who is considered to be very conservative and “backward-looking”, had to contend with resistance in his Basque diocese from the start. A group of Priests of the diocese to which 85 pastors (or 77% of the gipuzkoanischen Pfarr clergy) and 11 of 14 dean among the diocese, signed in advance of the inauguration a call with which the then chairman of the Spanish Bishops , Cardinal Rouco of Madrid , and Pope Benedict XVI. called for the appointment to be canceled. After six years of his pontificate, the bishop has, according to critics, to which large parts of the clergy still belong, filled all important posts in the diocese hierarchy with followers from his clientele . According to insiders, church life in Gipuzkoa stagnated under Bishop Munilla and almost came to a standstill. At the end of 2018 there were again public protests against the bishop because he had entered the lucrative local hotel business with the church assets of his diocese , which critics did not consider ethically justifiable for a bishop.
