Joschik w tumane ( Russian Ёжик в тумане [ ˈjɵʐɨk f tʊˈmanʲɪ ], German 'Igelchen im Nebel' ) is a Soviet / Russian cartoon by Juri Borissowitsch Norstein (* 1941) from 1975. It was produced by the animation film studio Sojusmultfilm in Moscow . The script was written by Sergei Koslow, who also published a book with the same title. In 2006 a new edition of the book appeared, in which both Norstein and Koslow were given as authors.

The film is about a little hedgehog who is on the way to meet his friend the bear. As explained in the introductory narrative, the two meet every evening to drink tea from the bear's samovar . The tea was heated on a fire made from juniper branches. While they are drinking tea, the hedgehog and bear talk and count the stars.

On this day the hedgehog decides to bring raspberry jam for the bear. As the hedgehog leaves, a sinister looking eagle owl follows him . The hedgehog walks through the forest and meets a beautiful white horse standing in the fog. He is curious whether the horse would drown if it fell asleep in the fog. The hedgehog decides to go into the fog himself. The deeper it penetrates, the thicker the fog becomes, until the hedgehog can no longer see its own paws.

Then the fog changes and becomes sometimes denser, sometimes thinner. When he is thinner, the hedgehog briefly sees vague silhouettes of objects and living beings that disappear again. The hedgehog finds himself in a surreal and often frightening world full of shapes, not always recognizable, and various living beings - from dangerous predators to benevolent animals, in a world of silence and rustling, of darkness, tall grass and enchanting stars.

The eagle owl that was chasing the hedgehog suddenly appears next to him and hoots, only to disappear again, whereupon the hedgehog calls him Psycho ( Russian : псих ). He is scared, but his curiosity forces him to discover the unknown. At times, a distant, invisible voice can be heard calling for the hedgehog. The hedgehog explores a large hollow tree, then realizes that it has lost the raspberry jam. He meets a dog he is frightened of. But the dog helps him to find the lost jam.

Later he falls into a river believing that he will drown. He drifts downstream on his back and is eventually rescued by a mysterious "someone", presumably a fish. This drops him on the bank. The hedgehog finds himself at the campfire, where his friend Bear is making tea. The bear tells how worried he was when the hedgehog didn't come. He called to him but received no answer. The two sit together, and while the bear speaks and speaks, the hedgehog ponders the experiences in the fog and how good it is to be together again. And think of the horse.

The narrator's spokesman was Alexei Vladimirovich Batalov , Marija Vinogradova spoke the hedgehog and Vyacheslav Nevinny the bear.

A statue of the hedgehog was erected in 2009 in downtown Kiev , Ukraine .

The film had a huge impact on music video director and filmmaker Michel Gondry . This took elements of the film in the music video Human Behavior by Björk (1993). Anime director Hayao Miyazaki was impressed by Norstein's work and describes The Hedgehog in the Fog as one of his favorite animated films.

In July 2012, the band Samsas Traum released a song in their fairy tale album Asen'ka, entitled Hedgehog in the Fog , which refers to the work. In October 2012, the story appeared as a German-language picture book under the name Igelchen im Nebel .

The German book title uses the diminutive Igelchen (Russian Joschik ) as a literal translation of the original Russian title . In most of the countries in which the film was shown, however, the film title is translated without the diminutive form, i.e. hedgehog in the fog .
