José Arturo Álvarez Hernández (* 28. June 1985 in Houston , Texas ) is an American football player with Salvadoran descent, currently at Houston Dynamo plays. In addition, he has been El Salvador's senior national team since 2009 , having previously played in various US selections.

Career

society

Alvarez didn't play college soccer , but got his chance through the Generation Adidas project , which was sponsored by the sports brand Nike at the time and was called Project-40 . In the 2003 MLS SuperDraft , he was selected as the thirteenth pick by the San José Earthquakes . On June 14, 2003 he scored his first goal against FC Dallas , but he received only a short stint from his coach Frank Yallop . After 26 appearances and two goals, he moved in 2005 together with his teammate Richard Mulrooney to the club against which he had scored his first MLS goal, to FC Dallas. In exchange, the Quakes got Brad Davis .

At the MLS Cup Playoffs 2007 he was sent off in the semi-final second leg against the Houston Dynamo in the 47th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct with a red card after he had kicked his opponent Brad Davis in the groin. Dallas won the first leg 1-0, were down 2-1 in the second leg and lost 4-1 in extra time. In November 2007 he had a one-week trial training session at the top French club Girondins Bordeaux , but they did not accept him into the professional team afterwards. After 86 games and eleven goals at FC Dallas, he moved back to the San José Earthquakes in July 2008. In his first game for the Earthquakes , a 3-2 home win over Los Angeles Galaxy , he also scored a goal.

On November 24th, he was selected in the tenth round of the MLS Expansion Draft by the Portland Timbers , but moved to Real Salt Lake in the second round of the MLS SuperDrafts . After sixteen league games, Alvarez's contract was not renewed and therefore he was drafted on December 5th at the "MLS Re-Entry Draft 2011" from CD Chivas USA . But on January 30, 2012, his contractual relationship was dissolved and he got a two-year contract with the Portuguese club FC Paços de Ferreira . On March 18, he scored his first league goal for his new club against Académica de Coimbra .

In February 2013, Alvarez was loaned to the Hungarian club Videoton FC until the end of the season . After the loan period ended in June 2013, he was permanently signed by Videoton and signed a two-year contract with the Hungarian first division club. At Videoton FC, he performed well in the Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság and was used regularly, so that his contract was extended prematurely until the end of the 2015/16 season.

National team

Alvarez played through the US U-17 , U-18, U-20 and U-23 national teams. However, he was never nominated for an international match. Since he is of Salvadoran descent, the national coach Carlos de los Cobos nominated him for his squad. On August 12, 2009, he made his debut against Trinidad and Tobago in the 2010 World Cup qualifying when he came on for Osael Romero in the 46th minute . That game ended in a 1-0 defeat. On September 5th, he played at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy , Utah against his home country, the USA . El Salvador lost 2-1. Just four days later, he played his first home game in a 1-0 win over Costa Rica . So far, he has played 21 international matches for El Salvador.
