Hofmeister played at SV Stockstadt in the lower-class amateur area until he was 21, before moving to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga for the 1967/68 season. In addition to Hofmeister, the 1966 European Cup winner signed Klaus Brakelmann , Werner Köddermann and Horst Koschmieder. Author Dietrich Schulze-Marmeling notes: “The commitment policy for the 1967/68 season was even more cautious than in the previous year. Only actual or perceived talent was brought in. ”He played two seasons in the Bundesliga for BVB, playing three games each time. The attacker, who can be used on both wing positions, made his debut under coach Heinz Murach on matchday 23, February 17, 1968, in a 5-0 home win against Karlsruher SC in the Bundesliga and also scored his first goal on the right wing at the same time for Dortmund. The BVB attack was in the formation with Hofmeister, Horst Trimhold , Sigfried Held , Willi Neuberger and Lothar Emmerich . Since Reinhard Libuda and Reinhold Wosab also belonged to the offensive division of the Black-Yellows, the newcomer could not establish himself in the regular eleven. Hofmeister played his last Bundesliga game for Dortmund on October 30, 1968 in a 1: 4 away defeat against Bayern Munich. He came on in the 46th minute for Dietmar Erler .

He left the Ruhr area after two years and then played one year for SV Darmstadt 98 in the second -rate regional soccer league south in 1969/70 . He scored five goals in 27 games for the blue-whites from Böllenfalltor, but was relegated to the amateur camp under coach Heinz Lucas as 18th alongside teammates such as Uwe Ebert , Wolfgang Mühlschwein , Jürgen Rohweder and Wolfgang Solz . He lost the decisive game for relegation with the "Lilien" on May 20, 1970 1: 4 on the Bieberer Berg against Kickers Offenbach. Hofmeister stayed in the regional league with his move to Freiburg FC . In addition to Hofmeister, defender Hubert Windsperger signed with the Möslestadion team and the career of goalkeeper Hubert Birkenmeier began. Under coach Hans Pilz and at the side of players like Werner Anzill , Karl-Heinz Bente , Hans Linsenmaier , Karl-Heinz Mießmer , Helmut Siebert and Hans-Günter von de Fenn , he finished 9th with the FFC; Hofmeister had scored six goals in 25 league games. In the second year in Freiburg, 1971/72, he increased his personal record to 31 regional league appearances in which he scored nine goals. With storm colleague Siebert, he led the internal goalscorer list together. The FFC finished in 6th place under the returning coach Hans Wendlandt and the new defense chief Blagomir Krivokuća played a major role in this. Because of his dribbling skills, Hofmeister had earned the nickname "Hakensepp" during his two rounds at the FFC. For Freiburg he scored 15 goals in 56 games in two seasons from 1970 to 1972.

In particular, his performances in the 1971/72 season had made the winger interesting again for the Bundesliga. He got a contract with Eintracht Frankfurt for the 1972/73 season and played again in the upper house of German football. In addition to Hofmeister, Uwe Kliemann , Günther Wienhold , Raimund Krauth and Karl-Heinz Körbel joined coach Erich Ribbeck's team as newcomers.
