Josef Laurenz Kunz

Josef Laurenz Kunz (born  April 1, 1890 in Vienna ; †  August 5, 1970 in Toledo, Ohio ) was an Austrian - American lawyer . From 1927 to 1932 he taught international law at the University of Vienna and, after emigrating to the USA in 1932, worked as a professor at the University of Toledo from 1934 .

Life

Josef Laurenz Kunz was born in Vienna in 1890 and studied law in London , Paris and at the University of Vienna , where he was considered one of Hans Kelsen's favorite students and received a doctorate in law in 1913 and a doctorate in political science in 1921 . In 1908/1909 and from 1914 to 1919 he did military service in the Austro-Hungarian Army . From 1927 to 1932 he taught international law as a private lecturer at the University of Vienna.

In 1932 he emigrated to the United States , where he was initially a Research Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation from 1932 to 1934 and then from 1934 until his retirement as Professor of International Law at the University of Toledo . In addition to international law, he also devoted himself to Latin American legal philosophy and published a number of treatises in Spanish on it . In addition to activities as a visiting professor at various universities, he taught in 1930, 1932 and 1955 as a lecturer at the Hague Academy for International Law . He was also co-editor of the American Journal of International Law and the Austrian Journal of Public Law . He died in Toledo, Ohio in 1970 .

Awards

Josef Laurenz Kunz was accepted into the Institut de Droit international in 1957, from which he withdrew one year before his death due to illness. The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1953 . In 1964 he received the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art .
