Josef Ruddel

Josef Rüddel (born January 20, 1925 in Hallerbach ) is the former mayor ( CDU ) of the local community of Windhagen in the Neuwied district . He achieved national fame in 2013 after 50 years in office as the longest serving mayor in Germany.

Rüddel is a trained farmer and worked as a cattle farmer until his retirement . During the Second World War, Rüddel was drafted into the Wehrmacht , in 1944 he was wounded while retreating from Poland and taken prisoner.

In 1955, the then 30-year-old Rüddel was elected to the Windhagen municipal council. At the beginning of April 1963 the mayor of Windhagen Josef Heuser died, on May 10th 1963 Rüddel was elected as his successor, on June 9th he finally took over the official business of the community. In 1975 the Windhagener received the badge of honor of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate ; On the occasion of his 25th anniversary in service, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1988 , and ten years later the Freiherr vom Stein plaque .

After the death of Karlheinz Poredda in March 2012, Rüddel became the longest-serving mayor in Germany and celebrated his 50th anniversary with the company 16 months later. In the local elections on May 25, 2014 , Rüddel was re-elected with 62% for a further five years. In May 2018, he announced that he would not run for any further term of office as local mayor and in June 2018, he would not run again for a seat on the local council. His term of office ended on June 19, 2019. By resolution of the municipal council on August 15, 2019, he was made an honorary citizen of Windhagen on November 16, 2019 .

Josef Rüddel has been widowed since 2017 and has three sons, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. he lives in the Windhagen district of Hüngsberg . His son Erwin Josef Rüddel (* 1955) is a member of the German Bundestag .
