Josef Schwarz (General)

Josef Schwarz (born July 2, 1932 in Prague ; † July 8, 2019 ) was a German head of the district administration (BV) Erfurt of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) in the GDR .

Life

The son of a working-class family - his stepfather Richard Schwarz was a stoker, his mother a flower maker - grew up in the Sudetenland, attended elementary school in Machendorf , district of Reichenberg from 1938 to 1942 , and from 1942 to 1945 the middle school in Kratzau , district of Reichenberg, and after his resettlement in the Soviet occupation zone from 1945 to 1946 the middle school in Boizenburg / Elbe without qualification.

After an agricultural apprenticeship and work for a large Mecklenburg farmer from 1946 to 1949, he attended the agricultural technical schools in Lübenheen , Krs. Hagenow and Dassow-Lütgenhof , Krs. Grevesmühlen until 1952 , where he graduated as a state-certified farmer. He joined the SED in 1950 . From 1952 to 1955 he studied at the Institute for Agricultural Economics at the Academy for Political Science and Law (DASR) in Potsdam, graduating with a degree in economics. He was then employed by the MfS and on August 15, 1955 began his service as a lieutenant in Department III (Economics) of the District Administration (BV) Potsdam . He completed a distance learning course from 1962 to 1968 at the Potsdam University of Law (JHS) as a qualified lawyer. From 1968 to 1982 he was the operational deputy of the head of BV Schwerin. Schwarz received his Dr. jur. PhD. On October 29, 1982, he succeeded Martin Weikert as head of the MfS's BV Erfurt and soon afterwards became a member of the SED district leadership in Erfurt. In October 1983 he was appointed major general by Erich Honecker . When the district administration was transformed into a district office for the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR in November 1989, he remained in office and was only appointed as head of the district office on December 7, 1989 by Lieutenant Colonel Horst Schuchardt, until then Deputy Head of Department XV (Reconnaissance) , replaced. In January 1990 he was released.

His memoirs appeared in Schkeuditz at the end of 1994 under the title “Until the bitter end - 35 years in the service of the Ministry for State Security. A GDR biography ”.

His son is the journalist, satirist and writer Stefan Schwarz .
