Josef Bergmann , from 1866 Ritter von Bergmann , (also Joseph Bergmann, born November 13, 1796 in Hittisau ( Vorarlberg ), † July 29, 1872 in Graz ) was an Austrian historian , philologist and numismatist .

Life

Joseph von Bergmann studied law and philology at the University of Vienna . In 1826 he started as a high school teacher in Cilli . From 1828, Alois Primisser's successor was the custodian of the coin and antiquities cabinet of the Ambras collection in Vienna, which is now part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum . In 1863 he became director of the coin and antiquities cabinet.

From 1831 to 1844 he also taught history and Latin to the sons of Archduke Karl . From 1848 he was a real member of the Vienna Academy of Sciences , in 1853 he became its representative in the kk Central Commission for the research and preservation of architectural monuments . Since 1857 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Josef von Bergmann's first marriage was Maria (1828–1839), a daughter of the Vice President of the Vienna Court of Appeal, Carl Joseph Pratobevera . In his second marriage he married her sister Luise.

He is buried in the romantic cemetery in Maria Enzersdorf . His son was the Egyptologist Ernst von Bergmann (1844-1892).
