Kaiser Marshall , actually Joseph Marshall (* 11. June 1902 in Savannah , Georgia , † 2. January 1948 in New York City ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Marshall made his first appearances in Boston , where he grew up. a. with Jules Bledsoe and Charlie Dixon . In New York he first played in 1923 in the band of Ralph "Shrimp" Jones , before he gained his reputation as a leading jazz drummer in Fletcher Henderson's orchestra from 1922 to 1929 . In 1929 he played for McKinney's Cotton Pickers .

Even after he left Henderson, Marshall remained active as a drummer and band leader. His bands include a. the "Czars of Harmony" and the "Kaiser & Reynolds' Bostonians". He played in the orchestras of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway . Musicians he has worked with include LeRoy Smith , Leon Englund , Bobby Martin (European Tour 1937), Edgar Hayes , Wild Bill Davison , Art Hodes , Bunk Johnson (1946), Sidney Bechet and Mezz Mezzrow .

Joseph "Kaiser" Marshall died in 1948 of complications from food poisoning .

He was one of the first jazz drummers to use hi-hats .
