Joseph Strauss (born May 15, 1793 in Brno , † December 2, 1866 in Karlsruhe ) was an Austrian violin virtuoso , composer and conductor .

Live and act

Joseph Strauss, whose father was concertmaster at a small Italian court, learned to play the violin and piano at an early age. After he went to Vienna, orphaned at an early age, he finally decided to become a musician and became a student of Joseph von Blumenthal , Ignaz Schuppanzigh , Franz Teyber and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger .

At the age of twelve he already appeared as a violinist in intermediate acts at the Theater an der Wien . In response to the imperial applause of these performances, the boy was given a position as violinist in the court opera orchestra , but he continued his musical studies. Due to his early successes as a violin virtuoso and composer, he was solo violinist at the theater in Pest from 1810 , where the first major compositions were written.

In 1813 Strauss became theater conductor in Timisoara , in 1814 in Sibiu , where he created his operas Faust's Leben und Daten and The Sons of the Forest , and in 1817 in Brno. After a long concert tour, he went to Strasbourg in 1822 and founded the Deutsche Oper there. In the following year he came to the Nationaltheater Mannheim as concertmaster , but in the same year he took over this position at the Grand Ducal Court Theater in Karlsruhe, where he held the position of court conductor from 1824 to 1863. In 1840 he directed the German Opera in London.

In Karlsruhe he composed the operas Armiodan , Zelide , Berthold, der Zähringer and Der Werwolf . With this work he had great success in Vienna, the first performance in 1837 followed by over 50 performances. In 1863, Strauss retired at the age of 70 and died almost three years later.
