Joseph Ziegler (theologian)

Joseph Georg Ziegler (born March 15, 1902 in Tauberrettersheim near Ochsenfurt , † October 1, 1988 in Würzburg ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Old Testament scholar . He was rector of the University of Würzburg (1961–1962).

Life

Joseph Ziegler, son of a farming family, studied after graduating from high school in 1921 Catholic theology and philosophy at the University of Würzburg. From 1921 he was a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Markomannia Würzburg . In 1926 he was ordained a priest . In 1929 he was at John Hehn with a dissertation on the love of God in the prophets to Dr. theol. PhD . He was initially active in pastoral care. From 1930 he studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , especially with the later Cardinal Augustin Bea SJ . His post-doctoral thesis, Studies on the Septuagint of the Book of Isaias, was written in Rome, with which he received his habilitation for Old Testament exegesis in Würzburg in 1933 and which was published in Münster in 1934.

From the winter semester of 1933/34 onwards, he was initially a private lecturer in Old Testament exegesis in Würzburg, and he was the representative of the Old Testament professor in Braunsberg ( East Prussia ) (1934) and Bamberg (1934/35). In 1937 he became a full professor at the Staatliche Phil.-Theol. Academy in Braunsberg ( Lyceum Hosianum ) appointed. In the summer semester of 1944 he had to leave East Prussia, losing all his belongings and his academic library, and in mid-1945 he found a home near Ochsenfurt. Shortly afterwards, he received an offer for a professorship as an orientalist in Göttingen , and also as head of the local Septuagint company. He refused this as well as a call to the University in Mainz .

In 1946 he accepted a position at the Philosophical-Theological University of Regensburg . In 1948 he was appointed to the chair for the Old Testament and Biblical-Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Würzburg. In the meantime, he turned down appointments as full professor in Munich (1952) and Bonn (1958). He retired on March 31, 1970, but was nonetheless engaged in Septuagint research (one of the oldest Bible translations). He was considered one of the leading Septuagint researchers of his time. Ziegler was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and since 1959 a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He has published numerous works, including other works on the Septuagint and the Book of the Twelve Prophets and the authoritative work Dulcedo Deo . A contribution to the theology of the Greek and Latin Bibles (1936). In 1953, his successor in office, Josef Schreiner, did his doctorate and habilitation with him.

In 1961, as rector, he campaigned for a new and modern location for the university on the outskirts of Würzburg.
