Jules Theodore Jonkheer Alting von Geusau (born July 28, 1881 in Nieuwer-Amstel , province of North Holland , † March 13, 1940 in Vogelenzang , province of North Holland) was a Dutch major general in the army .

Life

Alting von Geusau was a son of Lieutenant Colonel Willem Arnold Alting von Geusau and a younger brother of George August Alexander Alting von Geusau , who was acting Minister of the Navy in 1918 and Minister of War between 1918 and 1920. After attending the higher middle school in Maastricht and The Hague, he himself completed military training at the cadet institute in Alkmaar from 1897 to 1899 and at the Royal Military Academy ( Koninklijke Militaire Academie ) in Breda between 1899 and 1902 . After completing his officer training, he was promoted to lieutenant (Tweede luitenant) on July 22, 1902, and he began his service as an officer in the artillery force (Wapen der Artillerie) . First he was used in the fortress artillery in Utrecht and was promoted to first lieutenant (Eerste luitenant) there on July 22, 1906 , before switching to field artillery shortly afterwards on October 1, 1906.

After Alting of Geusau 1910-1913 a Staff Course at the Higher Military Academy (Hogere Krijgsschool) in Haarlem had visited, he was at the Royal Military Academy from 1913 to 1918 a lecturer and received there on 17 November 1916 was promoted to Captain (Kapitein) . He then served from 1918 to 1919 as commandant of the reserve school for the unmounted artillery (School voor Reserve-Officieren der Onbereden Artillerie) in Utrecht, before he was a lecturer at the Higher War School between 1919 and 1929. On May 4, 1927, he was promoted to Major (Majoor) and in 1929 moved to the 1st Field Artillery Regiment (1st Veldartillery Regiment) . On October 1, 1930, he took over the post of commander of the 1st Unridden Artillery Regiment (Regiment Onbereden Artillery) stationed in Gorinchem , where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel (Luitenant-Kolonel) a day later on October 2, 1930 .

Alting von Geusau was then Chief of Staff of the 1st Division between 1931 and 1932 and then held the post of commander of the Higher War School between 1932 and November 1, 1936. During this assignment he was on November 1, 1934 Colonel (Colonel) transported. After his promotion to Major General (Generaal-majoor) on November 1, 1936, he succeeded Major General Jan van Andel in command of the 1st Division (Eerste Vredesdivisie) and the 1st Division (eerste afdeling) . On July 1, 1939 he became the commanding general of the I. Corps (Eerste Legerkorps) , which was composed of the 1st Infantry Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment of the Royal Hussars and the 1st Infantry Regiment.

Alting von Geusau, who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion , the Officer's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau and the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold II , died on March 13, 1940, before the German army marched on May 10 1940 . After his death he was buried in the Sint Petrus Banden cemetery in The Hague. His successor as commanding general of the 1st Corps was Major General Nicholaas Theodorus Carstens .
