Jan van Andel (born June 26, 1877 in Poederoijen , Province of Gelderland , † January 1, 1973 in Leidschendam , Province of Zuid-Holland ) was a Dutch Lieutenant General in the Army .

Life

After attending school, Van Andel completed military training at the Royal Military Academy ( Koninklijke Militaire Academie ) in Breda between 1895 and 1899 . On July 29, 1899 he was promoted to lieutenant (Tweede luitenant) and was then an officer in the artillery force (Wapen der Artillerie) . During his further service he was promoted to first lieutenant (Eerste luitenant) on July 29, 1903 , before he was finally promoted to captain (Kapitein) on January 21, 1915 after twenty years of service . After the end of the First World War he attended a course at the Higher War School (Hogere Krijgsschool) in Haarlem and became an officer in the General Staff on January 1, 1926 after his promotion to major (Majoor) . During his local following uses was he on May 2, 1929 Lieutenant Colonel (Luitenant-kolonel) and on November 1, 1931 Colonel (Colonel) transported.

After his promotion to major general (Generaal-majoor) on March 1, 1934, van Andel was commander of the 1st (infantry) division (Eerste Vredesdivisie) between March 1, 1934 and November 1, 1936 and from 1936 also commander in person the 1st department (Eerste Afdeling) . In these positions he was followed on November 1, 1936 by Major General Jules Theodore Alting von Geusau . He himself became Lieutenant General (Luitenant-generaal) on November 1, 1936 and retired on May 1, 1937.

Before the invasion of the German Wehrmacht on May 10, 1940 , van Andel was ordered back into active military service and took over from Major General Godfried van Voorst tot Voorst as commander of the fortress Holland , which covered the cities of Leiden , The Hague , Rotterdam , Dordrecht and Enclosed Utrecht and was intended as the last line of defense for the Dutch armed forces . He held this position until the total surrender of the Dutch armed forces on May 14, 1940. He finally retired on July 15, 1940.
