Giulio Clovio
Giulio Clovio (* 1498 in Grižane near Crikvenica , † January 5, 1578 in Rome ) was an important miniature painter .
The first name Giulio is a monk's name that he adopted in 1528, previously he had the first name Giorgio . His name has been passed down in Italian ( Giorgio Giulio Clovio ) and Latin ( Georgius Iulius Clovius ). He also signed, referring to his South Slavic origins, as Crovatinus, Illiricus, Macedonus etc .; however, a South Slavic form of his name has not survived. In today's Croatian, the Croatian name form Juraj Julije Klović is predominantly common, but other reconstructed South Slavic name forms also appear (first name also Jure ; last name also Klovič, Glavičić, Glovičić ).
Life
He came to Italy in 1516 and worked in Venice , Florence and for a long time in Rome under the guidance of Giulio Romano . Among other things, he copied copperplate engravings by Albrecht Dürer .
In 1523 he went to Buda (now Budapest , Hungary ), where he was in the service of King Ludwig II until his death in the Battle of Mohács in 1526 . After returning to Italy, he entered a monastery near Mantua in 1528 , but because of an injury he was taken to a monastery near Padua for care , where he met Girolamo dai Libri , from whom he learned book illumination. In 1531 he entered the service of Cardinal Marino Grimani .
From 1539 until his death he was in the service of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese in Rome , although until 1561 he also painted miniature pictures on behalf of various nobles. In the last years of his life he was a patron of the young painter El Greco . Clovio was with numerous artists such. B. Michelangelo and Giorgio Vasari became friends and worked with Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the 1550s when he was in Rome.
He is buried in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli . Giorgio Vasari referred to him in 1568 as the "Michelangelo of miniature painting". His most important work is the Book of Hours by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese .
