Julius Gustav Neubronner (born February 8, 1852 in Kronberg im Taunus ; † April 17, 1932 there ) was a German pharmacist, inventor, company founder and pioneer of amateur photography.

Father and grandfather

The Neubronner family, descended from Tobias Neubronner (1694–1762), guild master of the merchants of the imperial city of Ulm , had been a pharmacist family in Kronberg since Christian Neubronner took over a pharmacy there in 1808.

In 1844 the pharmacy passed to his son Wilhelm Neubronner (1813-1894), a long-time friend of the painter Anton Burger and father of Julius Neubronner. During the March Revolution of 1848 he led the local vigilante group . Wilhelm Neubronner's wife and Julius Neubronner's mother came from the Löwe family of actors , her sister was the singer Sophie Löwe .

As a teenager, Julius Neubronner was an avid amateur photographer. In 1865 he found a camera for the Talbot method, which his father had built himself shortly after the invention of photography . All experiments with it failed due to the short exposure times in the now usual minute range. He kept the purchase of his first working camera from his parents. It was funded by a loan from a friend's family maid. When they were released, the device had to be sold, a lawsuit with the buyer ensued, and the matter was discovered. Later during his studies he had more success with photography. Together with another friend, he set up a photo studio in a rustic location, which Anton Burger caricatured as a meeting place for her sisters.

Neubronner was first taught at home with two sisters. His godfather Julius Löwe ran a chemical laboratory in Frankfurt, and from 1864 the initially twelve-year-old boy attended grammar school there from fourth year on. After three years he moved to Weilburg , where he completed his secondary school leaving certificate. After a year of apprenticeship in his father's pharmacy, he went to the Royal High School in Wiesbaden. He did his military service at least temporarily in the province of Hanover . In 1873 he completed his apprenticeship as a pharmacist's assistant in a Berlin pharmacy. He completed the prescribed 3 years of “fitness” at pharmacies in Bendorf , Frankfurt, Hannoversch-Münden and Nyon . In Nyon he made his first experiences with stereoscopy .

From 1876 Neubronner studied pharmacy in Giessen , where he joined the Academic and Natural Sciences Association (today Giessen Burschenschaft Frankonia), which had been founded four years earlier as a pharmaceutical association . Shortly after the pharmaceutical state examination in 1877, he began studying chemistry at the Royal University of Berlin in 1878 , but soon moved to Heidelberg , where in December 1879 he became a Dr. phil received his doctorate.

In 1886 Julius Neubronner took over the pharmacy in Kronberg from his father, as well as the use of carrier pigeons for the quick transport of prescriptions. In 1887 he acquired an important historical building, which was originally planned as a Catholic church in the Evangelical Kronberg but was never consecrated . After the building, which was last used as a restaurant, was converted by the Frankfurt architect Alfred Günther, the family and pharmacy were able to move in 1891. After Emperor Friedrich III. died in the three emperor year 1888 after only 99 days in office, his widow Empress Friedrich had her widow 's residence built in the forest near Kronberg Schloss Friedrichshof ; Neubronner now had the rank of court pharmacist.

Wilhelm Neubronner had already used carrier pigeons to quickly transport prescriptions; the medicine was often already prepared when the messenger from the doctor or patient arrived. Julius Neubronner expanded the use of carrier pigeons. He obtained urgently needed chemicals in quantities of up to 75 grams in this way from Frankfurt am Main and delivered urgent medication in the same way to the sanatorium in Falkenstein ( Königstein im Taunus ). This major lung sanatorium, founded by Peter Dettweiler in 1876 , was replaced by a rest home for officers between 1907 and 1909. In 1897 Neubronner received the approval the family had sought for almost 30 years to open a branch in Königstein.

Between 1903 and 1920 Neubronner recorded historically significant amateur films, which were restored by the German Film Museum from 1994 to 1996 and later published on YouTube . In the laborious process of gluing the photo glass plates for the purpose of lanterna magica demonstrations , he invented the process of simplifying and more durable “dry adhesive strips”, which he patented. For production and sales, he founded the factory for dry adhesive material in 1905 , which still exists today under the name Neubronner GmbH & Co. KG with around 80 employees.

In 1886 Julius Neubronner married Charlotte Stiebel (1865–1924). Her father Fritz Stiebel (1824–1902) was one of the most famous Frankfurt doctors of the time. Her maternal grandfather was the Kronberg patron and honorary citizen Jacques Reiss (1807–1887), the main initiator of the Cronberg Railway Company . In April 1915 she was one of the signatories of a greeting from Frankfurt to the pacifist International Women's Congress in Haag. The couple had three sons and a daughter.

Like his father, Julius Neubronner was a friend and sponsor of the Kronberg painters' colony , whose museum was later temporarily (until 2017) housed on the first floor of his house. As a hunting tenant, he had a spring built as the “Neubronner's fountain” in 1903, which still exists today in the Kronberg city forest with a small plaque.

In 1907 Neubronner became a member of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research .

Starting in 1909, Neubronner became internationally known by presenting his invention of carrier pigeon photography, first conceived in 1903 and patented in 1908 , to an interested audience at the International Photographic Exhibition in Dresden and the first International Airship Exhibition in Frankfurt am Main. Spectators in Dresden could watch the pigeons fly in, and the aerial photos they brought with them were converted into postcards on the spot. At the International Airship Exhibition in Paris Neubronner received two gold medals, one for the method and one for the results. This invention was used - unsuccessfully - in the First World War and later as an experiment for military aerial reconnaissance. It was mentioned in Meyer's Konversationslexikon and the Brockhaus Encyclopedia .

successor

After Julius Neubronner's death in 1932, the pharmacy remained in the family for two generations: 1932–1972 it was managed by Wilhelm Neubronner († 23 May 1972). He wrote a book about ice stock sport, which he made popular in Kronberg, founded the tennis and ice sports club Cronberg (TEVC) in 1928 and was active in the German ice stock association. 1972–1995, the pharmacy was run by his son Kurt-Heinz Neubronner (* May 24, 1926; † June 28, 2015), also active in the TEVC, after which it was sold.

Julius Neubronner's youngest son Carl Neubronner (born January 13, 1896, † November 19, 1997) took over the adhesive strip factory and managed it for 70 years. In 1957 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in 1966 he shared the company's profits with the workforce, and he was active in the association of the paper processing industry. Carl Neubronner became known for his experiments with model flying: at the age of 16 he developed the "Raketoplan", a rocket-powered model airplane, and the rocket model sports community e. V. awards the Carl Neubronner Prize annually. In 1984 he became an honorary citizen of Kronberg. The Carl Neubronner Sports Foundation has been supporting sports in Kronberg since 1987. Carl Neubronner was married to Erika Neubronner (born June 9, 1923, † May 8, 2005). In April 1997 they set up the Carl and Erika Neubronner Foundation, a foundation with a social focus.
