Juraj Dobrila (born April 16, 1812 in Ježenj near Tinjan , Istria, Austrian Empire , † January 13, 1882 in Trieste , Austria-Hungary ) was Bishop of Poreč-Pula and Trieste-Capodistria (Koper).

Life

Juraj Dobrila was born on April 16, 1812 in Ježenj, Istria , which at that time belonged to the Illyrian provinces and was shortly afterwards attached to Austria-Hungary . Dobrila, who comes from a Croatian family, first attended a German primary school in Tinjan and later in Pazin . Then he moved to a high school in Gorizia and later in Karlovac , where he also began the seminary . He was ordained priest in 1837. From 1839 to 1842 he studied theology at the Frintaneum in Vienna, where he also befriended Josip Juraj Strossmayer . After completing his studies, he became a chaplain in Trieste and headed a girls' school where he also taught German. During the revolution of 1848/49 Dobrila joined the Slavic movement in Trieste ( Slavjansko društvo ). He supported the introduction of Slavic languages ​​in schools and in public life, financed an education for Croatian children in Rijeka and Kastav and, above all, encouraged Slavic farmers to assert themselves against their Italian masters.

In 1857 Dobrila was appointed bishop of Poreč-Pula . From 1861 he was a member of the municipal council of Poreč and represented the interests of the city in the Viennese parliament until 1867. In 1870 he took part in the First Vatican Council , in which he was an opponent of the dogma about the infallibility of the Pope.

In 1875 he took over the bishopric of Trieste-Capodistria . Dobrila died in Trieste on January 13, 1882.

meaning

Dobrila was an important representative of the Slovenes and Croats of Istria, who were disadvantaged in political and social life at that time. Because of his merits, his portrait was featured on the front of the 10 kuna banknote. The University of Pula , founded in 2006, was named Sveučilište Jurja Dobrile u Puli in his honor .
