Yuri Ivanovich Schurawljow ( Russian: Юрий Иванович Журавлёв ; born January 14, 1935 in Voronezh ; † January 14, 2022 ) was a Soviet - Russian mathematician and university teacher .

Life

After attending the boys' middle school in Frunze , Zhuravlev began studying at the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) in the Mechanics - Mathematics - Faculty (Mechmat). As early as 1953 he prepared his first scientific work on the minimization of partially defined Boolean functions with Alexei Andreyevich Lyapunov , which was published in the journal of the Steklov Institute for Mathematics and in 1955 won first prize in the All-Russian competition of scientific student works. Solving the problem of finding words in a finite settaking into account the characteristics of its structure was his thesis, after the defense of which in 1957 he became an aspirant of the MGU at Lyapunov at Sergei Lvovich Sobolev 's chair .

In 1959, Zhuravlev became a research associate in the Mathematics Institute of the Siberian Department (SO) of the USSR Academy of Sciences (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) founded by Sobolev in 1957 in the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok . In 1960 he successfully defended his dissertation on the locality of problems of minimizing Boolean functions and his theorem of the local unsolvability of the problem of minimal disjunctive normal form for the doctorate candidate of physical - mathematical sciences. In 1961 he founded and then headed the Department of Complexity Theory and Computability Theory . Focal points were computer simulations , non-linear programming and applied research. He developed a general theory of local algorithms that took into account topological principles in the theory of algorithms . He defended his doctoral dissertation with this theory in 1965 as one of the first dissertations in the field of mathematical cybernetics with success for the doctorate in physical -technical sciences. His opponents were Viktor Mikhailovich Glushkov , Alexei Andreevich Lyapunov, Oleg Borisovich Lupanov and Assan Dabsovich Taimanov , who, at the request of Anatoly Ivanovich Maltsev, reviewed the technically very difficult parts of the dissertation. In the same year Zhuravlyov lectured at the congress of the International Federation for Information Processing in New York .

In 1966, Zhuravlev became the scientific deputy director of the Institute of Mathematics of the SO of the AN-SSSR. His new research focus became pattern and image recognition . Together with geophysicists Fyodor Petrovich Krendelev and AN Dmitriev , he analyzed the available information about gold deposits and developed an algorithm that led to the detection of new deposits. He developed an algorithm model for calculating estimates, which became the basis for extensive research and development work.

In addition to his research work, Zhuravlev taught at the University of Novosibirsk (NGU) at Anatoly Ivanovich Maltsev's Chair of Algebra and Mathematical Logic .

From 1969 Zhuravlev worked in Moscow in the data center of the AN-SSSR. He headed the Laboratory for Pattern and Image Recognition Problems, which later became the Department of Pattern and Image Recognition and Combinatorial Analysis and the Department of Predictive Computational Methods. Eventually, Zhuravlev became the scientific deputy director of the computer center.

In 1970, Zhuravlev began teaching as a professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI). He was a guest professor in the USA , France , Finland , Sweden , Austria , Poland , Bulgaria , the GDR and others.

Zhuralev was elected a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR in 1984 and a full member of the RAN in 1992. In 1992 he became a full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

From 1989 Zhuravlev was a member of the International Association for Pattern Recognition . In 1992 he became editor-in-chief of the journal Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis .

In 1997, Zhuravlev organized and then headed the Chair of Mathematical Methods of Recognition at the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of the MGU. In 1998 he became Chair of the Scientific Council for Complex Problems in Cybernetics at the RAN Governing Board.

Zhuravlev was a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and a foreign member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .
