The Essen correctional facility is the pre-trial detention center for male adults responsible for the Essen regional court district . Adult male prisoners are also detained there with early sentences of varying lengths. The institution offers space for 528 prisoners, the proportion of foreigners averages around 40%. Most of the accommodation is in solitary confinement rooms. The establishment dates back to 1910.

Until December 31, 2016, the Essen prison was connected to a youth detention center, which was located in Essen-Werden.
