The Heinsberg correctional facility is a juvenile prison in Heinsberg , North Rhine-Westphalia for male prisoners aged 14 to 24 years.

history

The Heinsberg JVA was put into operation in 1978 and at that time had 218 places in the closed and 24 places in the open juvenile prison system. After completion of the extensive expansion and renovation work that began with the groundbreaking on March 19, 2008, the number of detention places increased to a total of 566. Of these, 134 places are intended for the execution of pre-trial detention for young people. Since then, the institute has been the largest of its kind in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The institution has gained supraregional importance through its various socio-educational concepts, such as the establishment of special residential groups depending on the clientele, for example for violent criminals or particularly young offenders. In these residential groups, the inmates experience more intensive therapeutic support than in normal prison systems. In addition, a step-by-step educational model was developed in the Heinsberg prison, which has meanwhile become a model for juvenile detention. A wide range of training courses in cooperation with the Geilenkirchen Vocational College and a training provider form an essential basis for reintegrating the offenders.
