history

Königshorst was founded as Arendshorst. The Arendshorste were sand peaks in the Luch area, which were named after one of the owners of the area from the von Bredow family at the time. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I decided to drain the Luch area according to plans by Oberjägermeister Samuel von Hertefeldt . The Great Havelland Canal was built and when the king visited the area in 1719, Arendshorst is said to have been renamed Königshorst. In 1724 he set up the Königshorst office to manage the new property . In 1724 the drainage was completed and the Vorwerke Lobeofsund (1736), Mangelshorst (1747/1748), Nordhof (1732), Sandhorst (1737/1738) and Seelenhorst (1721) were created.

By decree of Friedrich Wilhelm I in 1732 a "teaching institute for butter and cheese making" was founded in Königshorst, which was popularly called the Butter Academy . This was intended to promote the establishment of a dairy farm based on the Dutch model and the improvement of the production of milk, butter and cheese in Prussia. To this end, he hired the Dutch Meier Heinrich Bröne as early as 1722. With the King's Supreme Cabinet Order of August 7, 1737, the officials were ordered that the cow-maids and farm daughters of the area should be sent to Königshorst for two years to learn the craft of buttering and cheese-making. The butter academy was housed in the "Butterhammerhaus", built between 1739 and 1740, in the Nordhof district. In 1780 Frederick II confirmed the activity of the educational institution as the "Ordinary Academy of Buttermaking". The local coat of arms also refers to this tradition.

On September 1, 1950, Königshorst was renamed Friedenshorst. The renaming in Königshorst took place on October 3, 1990.
