The Kühbichl , also known as Kühbühel , is a hill near Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer in the province of Salzburg .

Location and landscape

The hill ( 875  m above sea level ) is located south of the city of Saalfelden, in the middle of the Saalfelden basin , from which it rises a good 100 m. The Saalach , coming from the Glemmtal , flows around the Kühbichl to the west, the Urslau flows in the northeast , before it flows into the Saalach west of Saalfelden. On the northern edge is the Ritzensee bathing lake with Ritzen Castle . The eastern part is cultivated land, the western part is forested ( Kollingwald , ). On the hill, starting from the Ritzensee in the north, are the small towns of Schmalenbergham , Pfaffing and Schmieding in the east, Niederhaus and Breitenbergham in the south.

Because the hill lies east of the Saalach, it is included in the Salzburg Slate Alps ( Dientener Berge ).

etymology

Bühel, Bichl means hill, the name is to be understood literally, as a pasture area of the urban region. South of the range of hills it is called Kalbersbichl ( ) near the village of Schützing . The two places Schmalen- and Breitenbergham refer to the hill, the Bavarian -ing and -ham -names show the high age of the continuous settlement (7th century) around the Kühbühel (the pre-Bavarian settlements of the Celtic and Roman times can be found around the Biberg concentrated, see Celtic settlement on Biberg ).

geology

The Kühbichl is a terminal moraine of the Salzach-Saalach glacier formed in the late Ice Age above a rock core. The summit area of Kollingwald and Kühbichl is almost free of moraine deposits from a height of around 820 to 830 meters and consists of deeply weathered Wildschönau slates . On the east side there are carbonate sandstones down to the valley , which were previously quarried in two quarries ( ). ! 547.4144445512.8575005

The moraine area with central Alpine deposits continues to the south to the north of Maishofen . It is believed that the Zeller See reached the Kühbichl 10,000 years ago.

The Kühbichl shows clear erosion terraces, which indicate the old bank levels ( river terraces ) of the Saalach.

Leisure development

The Kühbichl is a local recreational mountain of the city and known as a "slide hill" for beginners. The well-known ski athletes in Saalfeld, such as Toni Mark , Lotte Blattl or Ernst Oberaigner , and probably a generation of Saalfeldners will have made their first attempts there (the Saalfelden ski club was founded in 1913). There were two drag lifts on the north side of the Kühbichl.
