Kārlis Zariņš

Kārlis Zariņš (born July 6, 1930 in Riga , Latvia ; † September 23, 2015 there ) was a Soviet or Latvian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Kārlis Zariņš was born into a Latvian working class family. In 1944 he finished his school days, then attended an economic vocational school and attended evening courses. He then studied singing from 1955 to 1960 at the Latvian State Conservatory , the "Latvian Music Academy Jāzeps Vītols". To perfect his education, he undertook further studies at the Sofia Conservatory with the singing professor Iļjas Josifova and at the Sofia National Opera .

In 1960 he became a permanent member of the Latvian National Opera in Riga . He was a member of the Latvian National Opera for almost 40 years until 1996; he sang over 60 different roles there. Zariņš sang the subject of the teenage hero tenor at the beginning of his career ; later he was mainly used as a hero tenor in the works of Giuseppe Verdi , Richard Wagner and the Russian-Slavic repertoire. Towards the end of his career, he also took on some character roles.

From 1990 to 1991 he was also director of the Latvian National Opera.

From 1970 to 1980 Zariņš appeared as a guest soloist at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow . There he sang in over 50 performances, including roles such as Hermann, Radames and Don José. He has made guest appearances in the former Soviet Union , Romania , Bulgaria , Czechoslovakia , Spain , Germany, Italy , Holland , Belgium , Sweden , France , Austria , Greece , the USA and Canada . Zariņš has also made guest appearances at international festivals, including the Burg Dreieichenhain Festival in Germany (1992, as Herodes in Salome with “Otello Tenor”) and at the Busseto Opera Festival (in the title role of Verdi's opera Don Carlos ). In 1995 he sang Aegisth in the opera Elektra at the Graz Opera House .

Zariņš also appeared as a concert singer; In the course of his career he sang over 2000 concerts. The focus of his concert repertoire was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Giuseppe Verdi ( Messa da Requiem ), Antonín Dvořák ( Requiem ) and Gustav Mahler ( Symphony of a Thousand , Das Lied von der Erde ). His singing career lasted a very long time; only in 2006 did Zariņš finally say goodbye to the stage.

Kārlis Zariņš also worked as a singing teacher. He taught for many years as a lecturer at the Latvian Music Academy (Latvijas Mūzikas akadēmijas) and was later professor of singing there. His students included the Latvian tenor Ingus Pētersons .

Zariņš's voice is documented by numerous sound recordings in the operatic genre, with vocal chamber music and vocal-instrumental compositions. In 1968 a record with opera arias was released. In 2000 the CD Popularas operu arijas was released on the occasion of his 70th birthday . In the area of ​​modernism, Zariņš recorded works by the Latvian composer Imants Kalniņš, among others .

Zariņš has received several musical and state awards, including the Great Latvian Music Prize (Lielā Mūzikas balva) in 1994 , the "Aldara" music prize in 1999 for his musical life's work and in 2001 the Three Star Order (Triju Zvaigžņu ordenis) .

Zariņš was married to his wife Regīnu Zariņu since 1953. The marriage resulted in a daughter who died in 2003. Zariņš died at the age of 85 after a serious illness.
