The K2

Taylor and Harold are good friends and passionate mountaineers . On one of their climbing tours together, they meet billionaire Phillip Claiborne, who is planning an expedition to K2 , the second highest mountain on earth. When two mountaineers from his team died in an avalanche , Taylor took the opportunity at the funeral to convince Claiborne that he should fill the gap with him and his comrade Harold. After all, both are experienced enough to conquer one of the most difficult peaks in the world. Finally, Claiborne agrees and takes the two climbers on the expedition.

The climb up the mountain turns out to be very difficult. When crossing a crevasse , several members of the expedition, including Malik, the Sherpas' middleman, fell into the depths, but were rescued by their comrades, including Harold. Then there are disputes with the porters, the Sherpas : They are dissatisfied with their remuneration and want to renegotiate with the expedition members. Finally, u. a. granted a bonus for a certain part of the ascent. Nevertheless, the Sherpas later refuse to take the last stage up the mountain because they are afraid of ghosts. Finally Malik can report that some of the porters are ready to continue climbing the mountain.

Since most of the load carriers are now missing, the complete equipment can no longer be transported. They set up a base camp and it is decided by Claiborne that only two climbers should climb the summit, namely Dallas and Takane. During their nightly ascent, the two get caught in a snow storm and Dallas is killed. Takane turns back and makes it to the base camp to Taylor and Harold's tent, but succumbs to severe frostbite after unsuccessful attempts at resuscitation.

Then Taylor and Harold are supposed to climb the summit and look for Dallas, but cannot find him on the ascent. Finally, with the last of their strength, the two mountain friends manage to conquer the mountain peak. In the meantime, they learned over the radio that Claiborne, who had contracted pulmonary edema due to the extreme altitude , was getting worse and worse. He must be brought to a lower altitude as quickly as possible and taken to the hospital by helicopter.

On the descent from the summit of K2 the weather changes; Due to a misstep in an icy place on the mountainside, Harold falls and pulls Taylor down with him. Taylor can catch his fall with his ice ax, while Harold falls further, hits hard and breaks his leg in the process. Taylor rushes to his aid and splits his leg. The further descent turns out to be very difficult, as Harold can no longer cope with the descent on his own; he is now fully dependent on the help of his friend.

Both feel more and more deprived of their strength due to the difficult weather conditions and the extreme altitude. Finally, Harold asks his friend to leave him alone. The latter does not want to let his comrade down, but then decides to go down alone. On his descent, he finds Dallas - frozen to death. He takes his equipment, along with a few injections of adrenaline , and returns to Harold. After Harold has been given the adrenaline, the two pull themselves up and continue their descent.

In the base camp they have almost given up hope that Harold and Taylor will ever return alive. Claiborne finally makes the decision to leave without the two of them with his rest of the team. Malik, however, protests and instructs the helicopter pilot to look for the missing climbers. After all, he owes his life to one of them, Harold.

Taylor and Harold are now at the end of their tether and are just dragging themselves away. Suddenly the helicopter appears in front of them and the two are saved.

Reviews

“Franc Roddams […] overwhelming summit hunt is the action nirvana for sports freaks. [...] His brilliantly photographed battle with the primeval forces of the mountain largely dispenses with symbolic messages, but offers pure adrenaline for fans who want to get their money's worth without engaging in orgies of violence. The high tempo of the film and the sympathetic and credible performance of the team Biehn and Matt Craven […] help over the occasional banalities of the script. [...] "
