The KLS Martin Group is a global family business in medical technology based in Tuttlingen . The group has been dedicated to operative surgery since 1923 . The company develops, produces and sells medical technology products such as implant systems, high-frequency surgical devices, surgical lasers, sterilization containers, operating lights , surgical instruments and complete solutions for the operating room.

On September 1, 1923 Fritz, Gotthilf Martin and Wilhelm Martin founded the Martin brothers OHG . The company's purpose was the manufacture of surgical instruments and metal goods of all kinds, as well as the trading of own and third-party products. One of the first HF devices was developed in cooperation with the University Medical Center Freiburg . Gotthilf and Wilhelm Martin left the company a short time later and Fritz Martin initially took over his brothers' shares. The managing director at Gebrüder Martin OHG was Rudolf Buck, who also took the initiative to merge other Tuttlingen-based companies in the medical technology sector. In the following years, the Martin brothers, OHG, took over the distribution of products from Rudolf Buck GmbH, Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Berchtold brothers GmbH & Co. KG, Ueth & Haug GmbH, Karl Vögele Medizintechnik GmbH, H. + H. Handte GmbH & Co. KG and Josef Heiss OHG .

Fritz Martin sold his shares to the other shareholders soon after the merger. The company name Gebrüder Martin OHG, which is now known in the international markets, was continued.

The Second World War initially stopped further development. A company building was completely destroyed in 1945 and the situation forced employees to work in emergency shelters.

In the 1950s, new catalogs appeared, and new product lines such as surgical instruments made of stainless steel were added to the range. The company established itself internationally through participation in international trade fairs and through worldwide marketing activities. In 1975, together with Prof. Champy from Strasbourg , mini-plate osteosynthesis was developed in oral surgery. In 1980 a new sales building was built in Ludwigstaler Str. 132 in Tuttlingen and in 1981 the company moved into. In 1990 Stuckenbrock Medizintechnik GmbH was founded. A year later, the Berchtold brothers left the group. Their capital shares were transferred to the companies Trumpf GmbH + Co. KG, Ditzingen , and Fritz Hüttinger Medizintechnik GmbH + Co. KG, Freiburg . The two companies were henceforth additional shareholders.

The development of the ulnar head prosthesis in 1992 marked the start of hand surgery . In the same year, the first subsidiary Martin Italia Srl, based in the greater Milan area in Italy, started operations. In 1993 laser devices for contactless cutting, ablation and hemostasis were added to the range and Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik founded KLS Martin LP in Jacksonville ( Florida ), which from then on sells special products for oral and maxillofacial surgery , plastic surgery and neurosurgery in North America.

In 1995 Stuckenbrock Medizintechnik GmbH bought the shareholder company H. + H. Handte GmbH & Co. KG and took over their shares in Gebrüder Martin. The shareholder companies Karl Vögele Medizintechnik GmbH and Stuckenbrock Medizintechnik GmbH were merged in 1995 and in 1998 the company shares of Josef Heiss OHG were taken over. 1995 with Nippon Martin KK was founded in Tokyo and further subsidiaries were founded in Huizen near Amsterdam and Martin Nederland / Marned BV.

In 2000 the MY40 laser was specially developed for lung surgery. In 2001 the shares of Ueth & Haug GmbH in Gebrüder Martin were bought up by Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG and merged with them. The company shares of Trumpf GmbH + Co. KG in Gebrüder Martin were taken over in 2004 by Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG and merged with it and the name KLS Martin Group was introduced as an umbrella brand. In the same year Fritz Hüttinger Medizintechnik GmbH + Co. KG was renamed Trumpf Medizin Systeme GmbH + Co. KG. Thereafter, the company shares were taken over by Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG and another name change to KLS Martin + Co. KG. In the course of further expansion, the new goods provision center was built in Tuttlingen in 2003 . The maXium HF device was introduced at the same time . In 2005 the entry into HF vessel sealing followed and the subsidiary KLS Martin France SARL was opened in Colmar .

In 2006 the SonicWeld Rx system for osteosynthesis in oral and maxillofacial surgery was introduced. The ultrasound device enables absorbable osteosynthesis materials to be anchored in the bone structure. In the following years, various representative offices were opened. 2007 in Moscow , 2010 in Shanghai and 2011 in Dubai In the same year the subsidiary KLS Martin UK Ltd. was founded in Reading, England . founded and introduced the modular concept marWORLD® to offer individual complete solutions for the operating room from a single source.

On the occasion of the 90th birthday of Gebrüder Martin in 2013, the roundabout in Ludwigstaler Strasse in Tuttlingen was officially renamed KLS Martin Platz. At the same time as the name was given, a sculpture by the artist Jörg Bach was unveiled in the center of the circle . The official address of Gebrüder Martin is now: KLS Martin Platz 1 (formerly Ludwigstaler Str. 132).

The KLS Martin Group consists of four manufacturing companies and the two sales organizations. The four manufacturing companies include Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG, KLS Martin GmbH + Co. KG, KLS Martin Medical GmbH & Co. KG and Rudolf Buck GmbH. Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1896 with headquarters in Mühlheim an der Donau . The company is still family-owned and is now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Leibinger family. Rudolf Buck GmbH is also based in Mühlheim an der Donau. Like Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik, the company was one of the seven founding members of Gebrüder Martin. KLS Martin GmbH + Co. KG in Freiburg looks back on a long tradition in the field of electrosurgery . The company produced its first electrosurgical devices back in 1922 - at that time still under the name Fritz Hüttinger. Stuckenbrock Medizintechnik GmbH was originally founded in 1884 by the instrument manufacturer Karl Vögele. The company was owned by the Stuckenbrock family until 2020. With effect from May 1, 2020, the Karl Leibinger Group took over the main business operations of Stuckenbrock Medizintechnik and its shares in Gebrüder Martin. Business operations will be continued under the new company name KLS Martin Medical GmbH & Co. KG. The company's headquarters are in Tuttlingen .

KLS Martin is a member of the trade association for industrial companies in Baden .

In the 2019 financial year, the KLS Martin Group achieved sales of around EUR 300 million with around 1,500 employees. About 10% of sales were generated in Germany, 50% in the USA and 40% in the rest of the world.

Research and Development

The KLS Martin Group employs around 120 people in research and development. New developments as well as training and further education measures are often carried out in cooperation with medical professionals. There is close cooperation with the SORG Group (Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group) and the BIRG Group (Bone Implant Research Group).

The KLS Martin Group is a patron of local sports clubs and cultural events. The group has been the main sponsor of the 10 km run at run & fun in Tuttlingen since 2015. Scientific institutions such as Furtwangen University are also supported.
