Karakeçili is the capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the province (İl) Kırıkkale . It is 35 km from the provincial capital. The district is surrounded by the districts of Bahşılı in the north, Keskin and Çelebi in the east, which belong to the province of Kırıkkale , and the district of Balâ in the south and west, which belongs to the province of Ankara .
Karakeçili is on the road from Ankara via Gölbaşı to Kırşehir . The name Karakeçili , actually an adjective meaning with (or: from) the black goat, is derived from the Karakeçili , a Turkish nomadic tribe in whose traditional settlement area the place is located. The Karakeçili came to Anatolia in the 13th century at the time of the Mongol Empire from Khorassan and settled on the central reaches of the Kızılırmak . Members of the tribe who moved further west became the founders of the Ottoman Empire .
When Karakeçili was raised to a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1957 , the area of the district belonged to today's neighboring district of Balâ and with this to the province of Ankara. After the Kırıkkale Province was established by spinning off from Ankara Province in 1989, İlçe Karakeçili was founded in 1990 and joined the newly formed Kırıkkale Province (Law No. 3644). Besides the county seat there are only two villages in the county: Akkoşan (373) and Sulubük (108 inhabitants).
A stone bridge over the Kızılırmak near the village of Köprüköy should be mentioned among historical buildings, which runs parallel to the modern road bridge (D-260) over the Kızılırmak and is half sunk in the water of the river dammed there.
