Kari Ikonen (* 1973 ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( piano , Moog synthesizer , composition ).

Ikonen, who received classical piano lessons at the age of five, took an early interest in jazz and was trained by Matti Laukkanen in Jyväskylä from 1989 to 1993. From 1994 to 2001 he studied jazz piano at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and later composition with Jarmo Savolainen , Jukkis Uotila , Anders Jormin , Maria Schneider , Mike Gibbs , Sonny Heinilä and Olli Kortekangas; In 1996 he spent a semester at the Rotterdam Conservatory .

Ikonen leads his own trio and sextet; He also plays in the Orchestra Nazionale della Luna , in the Quartet Ajaton and in the Trio Toffa , with whom he performs both in Finland and in Europe. He has also worked with musicians such as Louis Sclavis , Bob Moses , Lee Konitz , Ingrid Jensen , Jeff Denson , Henry Lowther , Stan Sulzmann , Ron McClure , Vincent Courtois , Mathias Eick , Magnus Broo , Otto Donner and Raoul Björkenheim . In his current trio he is touring with bassist Oli Rantala and drummer Markku Ounaskari. He has also composed for the UMO Jazz Orchestra , the European Saxophone Ensemble, the Uusinta Chamber Ensemble Tanguedia Quintet and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. He has been a member of the Sibelius Academy's faculty since 1998.

Prizes and awards

In 2000 Ikonen won first prize at the International Julius Hemphill Composition Award (Jazz Composers Alliance, USA). His debut album Karikko , on which he presented compositions for various ensembles, was awarded the Jazz Emma 2001 as the best Finnish jazz CD in 2001 . In 2003 he received first prize for the best big band composition at the Italian competition Scrivere in Jazz . In 2013 he was honored with the Yrjö Prize as the best Finnish jazz musician.
