from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl-Artur Kovar (* 24. June 1938 in Essen ) is Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Analysis at the Pharmaceutical Institute of the University of Tuebingen . His main focus was on analytical methods such as NIR spectroscopy and the coupling of analytical methods such as DC - FT - infrared spectroscopy . Kovar also performed fundamental scientific research in the analysis of intoxicants and addictive substances . Even after his retirement, Karl-Artur Kovar is active in the training of pharmacy interns , as an examiner for the third section of the pharmaceutical examination and in further training for pharmacists .

Life and work

From 1978 to 2004 Karl-Artur Kovar was Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Analysis at the University of Tübingen, from 2001 to 2004 also Director of the Pharmaceutical Institute and from 1984-86 and again from 1996-98 the Dean of the Faculty for Chemistry and pharmacy. From 1992 to 1998 he was a member of the National Drug Council of the Federal Government, and for three years he was a member of the Drugs and Addiction Commission of the Federal Ministry of Health. He also took part in the Drugs Commission of German Pharmacists and the German Pharmaceutical Society (DPhG), a scientific society. One of his main areas of work, research into addiction diseases, took him to the German Society for Addiction Research and Addiction Therapy, of which he was President for four years.

Activities as a trainer

Even after his retirement, Kovar continues the accompanying teaching events in Baden-Württemberg in accordance with the licensing regulations for pharmacists, which he has been leading since 1975. This activity led to the publication of a book, the book "Der Pharmaziepraktikant", which is considered to be one of the standard works in pharmacist training. Kovar was also active in further training as a specialist pharmacist for analytics, as well as state examination examiner in the third section of the pharmaceutical examination.

Research and work focus

The fundamental research work of Karl-Artur Kovar is instrumental analysis in pharmacy . In particular , he further developed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR spectroscopy) and researched the application of analytical coupling methods, i.e. the simultaneous or successive application of different analytical processes. Here he devoted himself to the coupling of thin-layer chromatography (DC) with subsequent Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to DC-FTIR , with which he enriched and further developed the analysis of intoxicants and addictive substances , another research focus. He paid special attention to ecstasy and other designer drugs , especially their analytics, pharmacological effects and the psychological, physical and neurological effects of drug abuse.

Publications

Under the guidance of Professor Kovar, 99 doctoral students were awarded their doctorates , he published more than 250 publications and several books, including standard works in pharmacy training, such as "The Pharmacy Intern" or "Pharmaceutical Practice" and the " Auterhoff -Kovar" (Identification of Drugs , so-called "Idefix"). Further books and book chapters by Kovar deal with drug abuse and addiction risk , psychoactive substances and chromatographic and IR analysis methods. Also on medical guidelines for methadone - substitution of opioid -dependent he participated.

Awards and honors

In 1973 Kovar received the 1st Federal Film Prize at the German Pharmacists' Day in Berlin for the short film "Detection of hashish and marijuana in the pharmacy laboratory". In 1977 he was awarded the bronze medal of the University of Helsinki and in 1992 the gold medal of merit from the Baden-Württemberg State Chamber of Pharmacists .

Kovar has been a member of the Catholic student association KStV Alamannia Tübingen in KV since his student days .
