Karl August Hugo Clausius (born November 12, 1808 in Arnswalde ; † April 27, 1873 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and inspector of the 1st Pioneer Inspection.

Life

His parents were the rector of the Arnswald city ​​school Ernst Gottlieb Clausius (1781–1855) and his wife Justine Sophie Juliane, née Michaely, a daughter of the tax council Johann Joachim Michaely (1717–1808).

Military career

Clausius attended grammar school in Köslin and joined the Guard Pioneer Department of the Prussian Army as a pioneer on October 1, 1826 . From 1827 to 1829 he was commanded to train at the United Artillery and Engineering School and in the meantime advanced to Portepeefähnrich . From July 1, 1831, he performed fortification service in the fortress Spandau and at the end of the month he was aggregated as a second lieutenant of the 1st engineer inspection . On December 26, 1831, Clausius was transferred to the 2nd pioneer department and on June 27, 1833, with a patent dated December 18, 1830, he was assigned to the 1st engineer inspection. From the beginning of December 1835 to the beginning of October 1838 he was a department adjutant and then assigned to fortification services in the fortress of Stettin . On March 29, 1839 he became adjutant of the 1st Pioneer Inspection, in this capacity at the end of March 1844 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and on September 28, 1844 he was commanded for fortification services in the fortress of Posen . There he was promoted to captain II class on July 1, 1848 , and appointed commander of the 2nd company of the 2nd pioneer division on November 1, 1849. On July 20, 1852 he was appointed commander of the 5th pioneer division and Clausius was promoted to captain 1st class at the beginning of May 1855. On February 16, 1856 appointed fortress construction director of the Feste Boyen , he came on February 23, 1856 to the 1st engineer inspection. He became major on January 22, 1857 and commander of the Pioneer Battalion No. 1 on July 1, 1860. In this position, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 18, 1861 , on December 24, 1862 with the Order of the Crown, IV class excellent and on March 17, 1863 was promoted to colonel . On June 2, 1863, he joined the 2nd Pioneer Inspection as an inspector.

When mobilizing to war against Denmark , Clausius was commanded into the staff of the allied armies in Schleswig. He was released from this position on January 9, 1864 and appointed inspector of the 1st Pioneer Inspection. At the same time he acted from August 9, 1864 as a member of the examination committee for captains and prime lieutenants of the engineering corps. During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against Austria , Clausius was assigned as 2nd engineer officer to the High Command of the 1st Army on May 19, 1866 and took part in the battles near Gitschin and Königgrätz . He returned to his peacetime position on August 6, 1866, and received the character of major general on December 31, 1866 . On the occasion of the festival in January 1867, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves. Clausius took his on May 4, 1867 farewell with board .

He died in Berlin on April 27, 1873 and was buried three days later in the garrison cemetery.

Clausius married Emilie Ernestine Leopoldine Reichel (1828–1906), a daughter of Major Friedrich Wilhelm Reichel , on July 6, 1849 in Posen . Their son Richard Karl Wilhelm Clausius (* 1850) became a Prussian major and commander of the Pioneer Battalion No. 4.
