Life

Karl Schuchardt was born in Göttingen and studied medicine at the universities of Jena , Strasbourg and Göttingen . He received his doctorate in 1878. After completing his studies, he worked as an assistant at the Pharmacological Institute of the University of Göttingen. From 1880 to 1882 Schuchardt worked as an assistant at the Pathological Institute of the University of Breslau , before moving to Richard Volkmann at the surgical clinic in Halle in 1882 . There he completed his habilitation in surgery in 1885. In 1889 Karl August Schuchardt was appointed senior physician to the surgical clinic of the Stettin City Hospital , which he headed from 1895. In October 1901 Schuchardt died as a result of a surgical infection.

Act

Karl August Schuchardt succeeded in 1893 in Stettin with his "Hysterectomia perineo-vaginalis" the first extended vaginal uterus removal for cervical carcinoma , which was carried out in 1901 by the Viennese gynecologist Friedrich Schauta and later by Walter Stoeckel at the Charité in Berlin and Isidor Alfred Amreich (1885–1972) was further developed in Vienna. The operation was made possible by the development of the Schuchardt incision , in which the lateral vaginal vault was opened up by cutting the levator ani muscle . This enabled a much more radical operation and dissection with less risk of injuring the ureters .
