Karl Konrad Friedrich Bauer (born July 7, 1868 in Stuttgart , † May 6, 1942 in Munich ) was a German graphic artist , painter and writer .

Life

Karl Bauer spent his childhood and youth in Stuttgart, where he took up his studies at the Art Academy in 1888 after graduating from high school , which he later continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Wilhelm von Lindenschmit . During his studies, Bauer traveled frequently to Italy and France. He financed his studies by teaching the children of wealthy people from Stuttgart, such as Mathilde Vollmoeller-Purrmann and Karl Gustav Vollmoeller , or by drawing portraits. In 1891, during a study visit to Venice, Bauer, who also wrote poetry, met Stefan George , of whom he made the famous portrait. George was impressed by Bauer's drawing as well as his poems, which is why he published Bauer's poems several times in the Blätter für die Kunst and invited Bauer to the meetings of his circle in Munich. In 1893, Bauer spent studying in Paris. It was also Bauer who introduced Stefan George to the young poet Karl Gustav Vollmoeller in Munich in autumn 1895. His graphic work mainly includes lithographs , pen and ink drawings and drypoint etchings .

After 1896, Bauer settled in Munich, where he worked as an illustrator a . a. provided the book of songs by Heinrich Heine with drawings. In 1927 he took part in the Munich art exhibition in the Glaspalast with several etchings . In addition to his poems, Bauer wrote numerous treatises on history, literature and religion.

As a painter, he specialized in Luther portraits, for churches in Görlitz, Oppenweiler and Helsinki. In addition to portraits of famous contemporaries such as George and Vollmoeller, Bauer made numerous portraits of Goethe , Schiller and Beethoven .

In 1930 he moved from Munich back to Stuttgart, where he lived and worked above the city in Sillenbuch .

In 1932 he participated once in the 7th Stuttgart Secession with the portrait of his sister. He also took part in the exhibition Jury-Free Artists' Association Stuttgart .

During the time of National Socialism , Bauer made several portraits of Adolf Hitler . For this he was awarded the Goethe Medal for Art and Science in 1938 .

He died in 1942 while visiting Munich.
