Karl Franz Alexander Johann Wilhelm von Nesselrode-Ehreshoven (also: Nesselrode-Roth-Grimberg ) (born April 4, 1752 in Westphalia, † March 31, 1822 in Münster ) was a Prussian major general and most recently commander of the 13th Landwehr brigade. He was also a bailiff of Blankenburg and a knight of the Order of St. Joseph .

Life

origin

His parents were Karl Franz von Nesselrode (* April 14, 1713; † April 11, 1798) and his wife Anna, née Freiin von Loe (* August 14, 1721; † June 5, 1794). His father was the Elector of the Palatinate-Bavarian governor of the Duchy of Jülich-Berg , a secret council of state, state and conference minister , bailiff von Steinbach, ducal Jülich-Berg chancellor and knight of the St. Hubertus Order . The canon Johann Franz von Nesselrode-Ehreshoven was his brother. Karl's sister Isabella († 1824) married Johann von Bassenheim , Theresia (1744–1819) Philipp von Lerchenfeld . Karl's brother Wilhelm was married to Luise von Gontard. Their son Karl Robert (1780–1862) was Russian Foreign Minister and Chancellor.

Military career

He entered Austrian service in 1770 and advanced to major by 1795. As such, he took part in the First Coalition War in 1795/97 and in the Second Coalition War in 1799/1801 . In the second he fought in the sieges of Mantua , Kehl, Turin and Alexandria. In the battle near Verona he was particularly praised but also wounded, he was also wounded in the battle of Marengo . In 1807 he came to the newly created Duchy of Berg as Land Commissioner . There he rose to colonel in 1811 and took part in the Russian campaign the following year . On April 14, 1815 he switched to Prussian service and was employed as a lieutenant colonel and commander in the 1st Rhenish Landwehr Cavalry Regiment. As early as June 26, 1815, he became a colonel and on May 31, 1816, he joined the 1st West Prussian Dragoon Regiment. But on May 7, 1817 aggregated into the 2nd Uhlan Regiment. On July 8, 1819, he was assigned to lead the inspection of the Landwehr in the Münster administrative district, but on February 22, 1820 he was appointed commander of the 13th Landwehr Brigade. He was promoted to major general on March 30, 1821 before he died on March 31, 1822 in Munster.

The General von Gneisenau wrote about the Count in 1816: “A man of the finest sense of honor and a very exemplary way of life. He is a very good regimental commander who, imperceptibly in all respects, but especially regarding the uniform detail prevailing in the same, very appropriately and advantageously throws the regiment subordinate to him and its acceptance into the standing master - which award would make him very happy, However, on which he does not feel entitled to claim to the king because of the few services rendered to His Majesty - undoubtedly there will be a lot of profit for him. ”On the recommendation he came to the 2nd Uhlan Regiment.

He married Countess Josepha von Hatzfeld-Wildenbruch on October 1, 1782 (* December 26, 1761; † 1816). The couple had several children:
