from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Alexander Holtzmann , also Karl Holtzmann, (born October 23, 1811 in Karlsruhe , † April 25, 1865 in Stuttgart ) was a German physicist .

Life

Carl Holtzmann was born in Karlsruhe in 1811, where his father, Joh. Michael Holtzmann, taught philosophy and classical languages at the Lyzeum. His brothers are the theologian Karl Julius Holtzmann and the Germanist Adolf Holtzmann . Holtzmann studied at the then newly founded polytechnic school in Karlsruhe, where he turned to mining and metallurgy . He was married and one of his sons was the theologian Oskar Holtzmann . One grandson was the Darmstadt mayor and member of the state parliament, Ernst Holtzmann .

Services

As a teacher, Holtzmann taught mathematics and physics at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic and the Mannheim Lyceum . In 1845 he became the smelter manager of the Grand Ducal Ironworks Albbruck near Waldshut.

In 1851 he received the professorship for physics and mechanics at the Stuttgart Polytechnic . He was director there several times and was considered a "pioneer in Stuttgart's higher education system". As a scientist, he has written several textbooks and achieved significant achievements in the field of thermodynamics and mechanics ( Stephen Brush counts him among the dozen or so scientists who formulated a more or less general law of conservation of energy in the 19th century). He died in Stuttgart on April 25, 1865.
