Karl Mathias Rott , also Carl Matthias Roth , (born February 23, 1807 in Vienna ; † February 10, 1876 ibid) was an Austrian singer , cellist , composer , theater actor and comedian .

Life

At the age of ten, Rott became organist in the Church of the Birth of Mary and two years later came to the Court Opera Theater as a choirboy and child actor , of which he was a member until 1824. That year he accepted a position as cellist in the orchestra of the Bratislava theater. In 1827 he went to Graz with Director Stöger, where he wrote the music for Nestroy's first dramatic attempt The Exile from the Empire . Nestroy encouraged acting, and so he began his acting career in 1832 at the Josephstädter Theater . In 1836 he went to Pest , where he earned a reputation in the Raimund roles. In 1847 Rott accepted an engagement at the Theater an der Wien , to which he remained loyal from then on, with a small interruption.

In 1862 he married the singer and actress Maria Rosalia Lutz , with whom he already had an illegitimate son, Hans Rott . Due to a stage accident in 1874, he finally had to give up his career. He died in Vienna on February 10, 1876.

The large number of roles (including Anzengrubersche ), which Rott typically knew how to shape, his humor and the versatility of his portrayal made him the darling of the Viennese public.

In 1899, Rottstraße in Vienna- Penzing (14th district) was named after him.
